How does Apple announce new products?

When apple announces a completely new product, how do they disseminate the announcement?

Do they send a press-release first that tells everybody what the new product is before the actual in-person unveiling event/conference?

Or IS the in-person unveiling event/conference the first announcement about the product?

They usually have media events to showcase the new/updated product.

Yes, usually a week before. You'll know when that happens because virtually ever gadget site/blog in the world will have news of the announcement on their front page.

They usually send out invitations to various media outlets but they don't really specify what its - at least explicitly say what it will be. They typically send out invitations like a week maybe two in advance of the event
