To Everyone Who Hates the Name Mavericks

Mavericks is a surfing spot in Half Moon Bay, CA that produces some of the biggest waves on the PLANET. A place somewhere close to Cupertino and probably the most famous surf spot in California.

There is nothing more epic that's California themed than Mavericks.

If you have a better idea, let's hear it.

The issue is lack of name recognition. I'm from Boston and I had no idea. I suspect it means even less to OSX customers outside of the US

I think it's a wonderful name
 
I dislike that it sounds plural. Like if if it had been "Mac OS Mountain Lions."

I know it's not plural, but it's sure going to sound that way to 99% of the people out there.

I don't hate it, but I think that's kind of a weird thing.
 
There is A LOT that is "more epic" than Mavericks in California. One thing to consider is not that people hate it but even people in California may not identify with it. Not everyone in CA surfs or has even heard of Mavericks. I think someone mentioned it in another thread, but state capitols would have worked very well.

Frankly, I don't care what it is named. This ****ing OS needs to work well.

State capitols is not a bad idea, but it wouldn't have gone with their California themed names.

"For our first California themed release, we went to OS X Mavericks."

Maybe they should have went with OS X Disneyland

But there's no reason to stick to Cali. They're an international company, expand your thought process.
 
In the end, the OS name will mean very little in terms of sales and revenue. The whole Human Race also laughed at the name "iPad" when it first launched, but that's history hmm?

I could care less if the next OS version is called OS X Chipotle Mexican Grill. (a well known and popular eatery chain in California)

I guess it doesn't matter that Apple's headquarters are in California.

Doesn't matter that Apple was created in California.

Doesn't matter that Steve Jobs was born and died in California.

YOU expand your thought process.
 
I see where they are going with this, but Mavericks was an unusual one to start out with.

I could see them going with something like:

Redwood
Sutter
Muir
Rubio('s) (Chipotle started in Colorado, IIRC)
Sierra
Chesley ('Sully' Sullenberger)

Or something similar. Something Apple, but something distinctly Californian. Though, they should have started this with OSX 11, not 10.9. They could have gone with 'Meerkat' or something for the 10.x series.

Jobs would have never allow this name scheme. Totally ruined the progression.
 
It wasn't in the mac dictionary so I thought it meant Big Wave or so...

As from outside US i can't really connect to that. Those cats expressed attributes everybody could undertand. I don't understand what that surfer theme has to do with Apple products.
 
I think it's a great name! Even if they didn't explain what it was all about, I still would like it. Kinda reminds me of Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun!

What's in a name anyway? It's what the OS is capable of that matters!
 
I think most people in the world will think about Top Gun with an 's' too much.

Jobs may have never allowed toggles either. I mean who knows and who cares what he would have allowed? He is gone. It's not like he'll turning in his grave ready to bust his ass out and strangle the moron who came up with the name. :D

I just want the damn OS to function. You could call is OS X jerk off for all I care.

I don't like the name but I like the functionality that Mavericks is bring to the table.
 
OS X "Mavericks". Stupid name.

WTF is with the plural anyway? Did we have Mountain Lions, Snow Leopards?

Added: Really like how they fixed the multi-monitor clusterf**k in Mountain Lions though.
