Right now the Community Discussion seems to be flooded by these threads. Ignoring the stickies at the time of writing 3 of the first 10 threads are [WW]. Could we create a "Forum Games" area to put these in?

Or else close the game that already finished. People are still going in there to talk, which is good, but the game is done so the thread has served it purpose. :)

"Flooded" Right, because the TWO active werewolf threads are just drowning all the hundreds of ill-conceived threads that come into MR each day. All the talk is confined within those threads and if it's not something you're interested in, don't click it! I hardly think a couple game threads in the community section require a complaint and request for a new forum. I think you're being a bit grumpy and dramatic here.

Don't game threads fall under "spam"?

That would seem a reasonable assertion given a) no actual discussion relevant to the general public is taking place b) not an actual discussion defined as: the action or process of talking about something, typically in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas.

I'm sure I could search the vast archive of MacRumors and come up with posts by admin or moderators expressly forbidding using the forums for game threads. How do I reckon? I created a 'count to one million' game thread recently but it was promptly deleted.

^ They are no more spam than any other community discussion. The wolf threads are right on their topic and people using them really enjoy it. It's the biggest reason I'm on here lately.

As for a count to a million thread, that IS spam because it's not a discussion, just a thoughtless post count trap. Please don't take your bitterness about your thread deletion into here by lumping it into the same category as a properly organized game.

There may only be two active threads now, when I posted there were (as my original post says) 3 being perma-bumped to keep them in the 10 threads at the top of the page.

Edit to add: if nothing else if they were in their own area I could set that to ignore in Forum Spy. At the moment that is impossible and given the spam-like nature of them this would be very welcome.

Sure they get bumped up sometimes but so do a lot of threads. I know I may be biased because I participate in one them but I don't understand what the big deal is. I highly doubt MR is going to make a separate forum for them but I worry this kind of complaining may get these threads disallowed here and that is really messed up. So many pointless threads get plenty of activity here and I find them easy enough to just overlook.

At no point have I suggested that they should be banned. Whilst there may be a case for that under the rules I am certain that the powers that be have considered this and have decided to let them stay.

I cannot see any harm in making constructive suggestions that would improve my MR experience. If everyone just ignored the things that annoyed them and made no effort to improve them then the entire site would end up like the iPhone forums :p

^ Fair enough. Even though you haven't said nor implied that they should be banned here I just worry that could happen. I really enjoy those threads and I'd be a very sad panda indeed if they went.

The moderation policy about games has been to disallow games that are based on rapid posting, such as users trying to form sentences with one word per post or playing a word association game. Posting rates, especially in the iPhone forums, are much higher than they were in the past, but the same concept applies. We want to avoid posting for the sake of posting.

This new type of game thread doesn't run afoul of the policy, although we would prefer not to see many of these threads all active at once.

There's no perfect home in the forums for a game within a thread. The Mac and PC Games and Console Games forums are for game software and hardware. We don't expect to see (and I doubt we would want to see) enough thread-based games like these ones to warrant a separate section.

Policies are based on what's best for the overall membership, and they change as the forums change, so getting feedback like this helps us with our planning. Comments can be made here or communicated to us privately.

Does community discussion posts affect your post count? If they do, at least I find it pretty unfair because games like WW mean that you have to post a lot but your posts can be like only 2 words and they are still acceptable because of the game. I know the post count doesn't really matter but seeing that there are other forums where post count is unaffected and they are more useful than these games are.

Another idea is that when the game ends, it's moved to Wasteland as that deletes the posts from your post count AFAIK. Just my ideas but I would find it fair that the posts made in these games would not count towards your post count. An own forum would be nice as well so it could be ignored in Forum Spy

Hellhammer - That's not a bad idea, moving them to the wasteland once they've properly run their course. When a game is over there can be a few days of continued discussion where people can finally have their say but not much after that. I'd be happy to keep an eye on them and report them for the wasteland when they're ready for it, if that's what would be preferred.

And thanks for the response, Q.

This. I assumed that the game threads would be wasted when the game was finished; it's not information or Q&A stuff so there's no need at all to keep them around. There's no useful reference to had in there to warrant they keep taking up space in the Community area.

I don't think so, Q. The posts are almost always right on topic. If anything a lot of the participants are wishing people posted MORE so it would be easier to suss out who has what role in the game.

the majority would just be there to play the game - i dont think a lot of people are about post counts, but at the same time i dont think they would be complaining that its increasing

Personally I don't like my massive post count and I'm keen on the idea of those threads going into wasteland when finished. I don't need nor want my post count going up. Rest assured I am only there for the game and I'm quite sure everyone else is too. If you're a little bitter you've missed out, a game just ended so keep an eye open for a new sign up thread.

Do you guys think some users are using the threads to build their post counts?

I doubt that's anyone's main reason they are participating the game but now that you think about it, you make dozens of posts in minutes without having anything important to say. Some of us are more post whores than others and I admit that I'm one though I'm not posting in order to raise my post count (I try to answer the actual question, help OP etc..). I'm sure some people think about their post counts when joining the game, at least I would :D

If I recall correctly, those "I'm waiting for Arrandale" threads were wastelanded even though they talked about Macs. At least one WW thread has been closed by mkrishnan so IMO it would be fair if they were wastelanded as well. Then we could at least avoid the possibility that someone joins the game in order to get easy posts as those posts are deleted from your post count when wastelanded.

If my opinion was asked, the whole community discussion should not affect your post count because the discussion tends to be pretty random. E.g. console games do not affect your post count as it's not Apple related but neither is community discussion, usually.

Doctor Q, do you think the wasteland is the way to go? Or has there been some better ideas?

you don't like a big post count? then why keep on posting? :p

the problem lies with the fact that the game seems to start while i am asleep, so by the time i wake up (and find the thread) - its already too late :( ah well.

this is one of the reasons why i always thought some sort of mark/"reputation"/etc would be useful. each user has the chance to enable the rep points for those users that like to help out the others etc. currently, high post counts (on this forum) roughly indicate the amount of help that the user gives to the forum, rep points would more reliably indicate this.

its post post counts i guess, are you scared of being overtaken? ;)

Rep system has its own pros and cons but I think it has been beaten to death here. I don't think we have to turn this into one of those threads, again. It would have been adopted ages ago if admins/mods thought it was useful.

yes of course, agreed, this is about the WW game.

im not sure if this game qualifies for its own sub-forum - a game lasts, what, 1-2 weeks? generally a sub-forum will have many more threads in it created per day.

it would be nice though, so i can finally find out where they are each time i want to play

It's not ideal, in that it makes it appear that the threads were disallowed or inappropriate in the first place, but I don't think that's a major problem. Overall it seems like a good idea. It was a good compromise for the Arrandale threads, making the larger number of short posts less of a problem.
