When you have the chance, can you physically go to the Apple store to check the machines there? So far we haven't had one user with a 2.53 GHZ machine report a 3 Gbit/s connection.

We haven't had one who bought the SSD configuration option.. someone a few posts back said the ones with SSDs configured BTO have 3.0 Gbit connections.

I'm not going to be surprised if a firmware update appears for this in a month or two.

Reminds me of the original Mac Pro's that had some issue with the drives performing badly in Windows, you could fix it will some messing about but eventually they fixed it properly with a firmware update.

That person doesn't have a 13" MBP with an SSD and didn't provide a source for his statement either.

I just checked my new 13" 2.53GHz MBP (stock config), and it's running at 1.5 Gbps as well. This is kind of annoying (although not immediately important for me, since I don't plan to get an SSD at the moment).

This seems like the kind of thing that's likely a software issue. Has anyone loaded Windows (or Linux) on one of these systems and checked what speed it reports? If another OS can run the SATA interface at 3 Gbps, then it must be an issue with Apple's drivers in Mac OS X, but if they're all limited to 1.5 Gbps then it might really be a hardware issue (although it also might be firmware that could be fixed).

loading win7 now and will do some performance tests on the drive. however, i'm fully expecting to see the limited speed

Good idea, I'll install Windows 7 right now and report back.

15" as well as 17" users should report here as well. I haven't ordered mine yet.

I just got off the phone with Apple engineering and they are confirming that the speed on the 13 inch mbp is 1.5 Gigabit, not 3.0 as previous gen was.

They said that cost was probably the deciding factor for this which makes absolutely no sense since it is the same chip.

So there you go. Like it or not.

Weird. So weird. Can people who actually have this machine in hand post a screen capture of the system profiler window? I've sort of got to see it to believe it.

I am totally upset at a feature that most people who never have noticed and only get upset about because everyone needs to find something wrong with an apple machine and post it here on MR.

Who is to say he doesn't already have one not listed?

I own an Apple TV. I can tell you to check my sig all day and all night, but guess what - it's not there.

...No one who ordered a 13" MBP with an SSD has gotten it yet. The ship dates are all in late June.

Ordered today:

13" MBP, 2.53ghz/256ssd/SD

Ship date June 25th, Delivers July 2nd.

I'm calling Apple tomorrow to change my shipping to expedited, for $19 it's worth it to get it sooner, lol.

Look, he came in here stating that people who ordered the SSD get the 3 Gbit/s connection. Now obviously he doesn't have one himself, so I wanted him to provide a source for his statement. I'm 100% sure now that it's ********. We don't need that kind of crap in this thread. Why are you defending him?

Argh, so used to installing Windows on a quad core box. Core2Duo is killing me. As soon as it's done, I have HD Tune ready to install and report back.

Does this only affect people who were thinking of buying a SSD? Or does this problem affect the performance of the laptop as a whole?

I apologize for seeming so ignorant but I have no idea what this all means and I was thinking of buying the 13'' MBP tomorrow..!

Thanks

brand new MBP 13" 2.53 500GB. Also showing 1.5Gb. I'm not freaking out. The chipset says its the same. Perhaps a software upgrade will "fix" it.

Conspiracy theory #1: They had to put an artificial 1.5 Gb cap on SATA in order to achieve 7 hours worth of battery life. Once it's been established that the machines do in fact have battery life in that ballpark, they can uncap SATA through a firmware update if enough people bitch about it.

Conspiracy theory #2: They've grown to hate the fact that everyone turns to the aftermarket instead of buying their overpriced CTO options, so they've put a cap on SATA speed for everyone except those who buy SSDs straight from Apple.

Yeah, I'm half joking but the decision in itself is so weird, it deserves equally weird theories.

I'm with you.I have no idea what this means either but if it affects the performance I may rethink purchasing it.

I just picked up a 17" today and its 3.0
Phew. :)

Once again the MBP 17" stands out as the only professional family member of the Pro family. I love how they slapped the Pro sticker on everything *and* downgraded SATA at the same time. Glossy only, 110 PPI, 2 USB ports, SD reader in place of ExpressCard Port, and now 1.5 Gbit SATA. The 13" and 15" models are so Pro now.

benchmark has already been posted from a user with this limitation, which shows that the drives performance is restricted by a good 30-50%

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/718462/

those vertex drives have advertised 230MB(read), 135(write)

Here is the same drive benchmarked in a couple of 2008 unibody machines. The results are very inconsistent. I found these at Ars.

welll given that I've read these forums thoroughly and seen that the 17" has been price dropped, upgraded and has the new better LED display and now that I know it's the only machine with 3.0gb, then I guess that's the machine I'll be buying.

Thanks apple for making up my mind for me.

Apple would gladly pour mercury down children's throats if there was money in it for them.

I love their products, but I hate the fact that they suffer from hypergreed(TM). I'm all for capitalism and healthy money-making instincts but there is a point where it gets disgusting...

Hear, hear! Agreed to the letter, and finally, someone else on this forum that sees it the way it is.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out and if Apple fixes this with a firmware or in future Macbooks Pros, 13" and perhaps 15" too.

no, you are wrong.

you people are so blindly attached to your beliefs, its spreading like a plague... read people.. once again has been proven, not that 17" is the only pro laptop, but that PRO is merely a moniker.
