I dunno. Any given day, week or even month in the regular market doesn't necessarily mean that much. Trying to find much significance in the after-hours market seems like a recipe for insanity.

I agree it means little. Just pointing out there are two kinds of people in the after hours market. :)

I was stating my opinion. The iPhone 5 is small compared to most other high end phones. It's basic look is the same as the iPhone 4. iOS looks the same, the same rows of the same icons. Stale. Old. Tired looking. Sure it works well, but there is room for updating and features, and looks. Windows XP still works fine, but it is long in the tooth compared to Windows 7. Again, my opinion and no bashing intended.

I'm just curious. It is really a skin issue. If the skin was different and fresher looking than that would do it for you, right? Nothing wrong with that by the way. I think the Windows Tile Phones look great. I also think the Blackberry "peek, hub and flow" gestures is superior to using the home button. But the hardware of all of these phones doesn't look better to me.

But would a launcher app with a different skin pretty much get you a good chunk of the way there to make the iPhone look fresher?

If the upgrade from the 5 to 5S is similar to the 4 to 4S, I don't see Apple holding a lead over the competition. I've seen the HTC One and it is a nice phone. IMO, the iPhone 5 looks dated next to it.

There are plenty of nice phones out there.

But iPhones are the only phones that run iOS.

Surprise... some people like the iPhone's operating system, apps and ecosystem.

Our competitors have made some significant tradeoffs in many of these areas to ship a larger display. We would not ship a larger display iPhone while these tradeoffs exist.

Buh?

*Looks at iPhone 5, which made exactly these tradeoffs.*

Is Tim drunk?

Samsung can sell more phones etc all they want, apple have got my business for the foreseeable future and it has nothing to do with price or specs and that kind of brand loyalty cannot be won away easily.

Apple fans love Apple. If there is such a thing as a "Samsung fan", how many of them do you think love Samsung?

... crickets ...

And of course now the stock is actually down after hours after being up as much as 5%. Maybe Apple should quit giving conference calls.

After hours is notorious for its volatility. Apple's earnings report was solid and better than what we've been reading and expecting. Given the positive news, I would expect the stock to drop because nothing Wall Street does makes sense.

No. Apple has trouble getting enough of its devices built as is. And has often had trouble with scalpers. Price is not set at a charity level for consumers. And no need to make scalpers richer.

Maybe, but I was having in mind Euro prices in Greece.

base iMac 27" EUR 2009 / USD 2729 | US PRICE USD 1799
base rMBP 15" EUR 2369 / USD 3080 | US PRICE USD 2199
16GB iPhone 5 EUR 739 / USD 960 | US PRICE USD 649 (unlocked)
16Gb iPad 4 EUR 529/ USD 687 | US PRICE USD 499 (cellular)

Crazy

if only I had Timmy's email address

Actually, I think it's because the iPhone 5 was selling poorly that they had to offer discounts for the first time.

I'm guessing it's more the mix of iPad mini and iPhone 4 and 4S models. Remember that supposedly the iPhone 4 was going gangbusters at Verizon. The 5 is selling just fine. What's happening is that the growth is from selling the older models for longer.

iOS has long become a liability rather than an advantage. Of course, those who have not tried, say, Android would not have realized this.

I read an article a few days ago that basically asserted every time Tim Cook opens his mouth, the stock drops. They even charted it. Now we have another data point! LOL

Every single earnings call the larger screen topic comes up, and every single time Cook dismisses it. Apple is playing with an unnecessary handicap here! Provide a choice in screen size like any other Apple product and I will immediately ditch my Galaxy Note and return to the iOS camp! And I am not alone!

It makes me sick how Apple is just sitting on its hands and leave a significant segment of the market wide open for Samsung. Apple needs to play the large screen market just to give Samsung some competition. The one size fits all solution does not work in the long run. Share buy back and dividend are basically screaming "hello I have peaked and I have no where to go but down", Steve would have never allowed Wall Street to run his company.

To people comparing Apple to Amazon, Amazon is worth half as much as Apple in market capitalization and it chooses to play the low margin game and focus on market share dominance. Both Amazon store and Amazon cloud are extremely difficult for competitors to dilute and the company is growing at an enormous pace.

Amazing. Amazon sells the Kindle Fire at break-even or loss and claim they will make it up with the eco-system. Analysts cheer, even as Amazon reports a loss. Apple sells the mini at over a 30% margin and has a real eco-system actual making money and the analysts all act like the world is coming to an end.

******* analysts... how do they work?

How does this hold up with Cook's promise that there would be a new Mac Pro (or, in my opinion, the fabled xMac) by mid-2013?

I think they could still release it soon. It just won't have a big effect in their numbers (Macs in general are a much smaller part and Mac Pro is an even smaller percentage of that).

Honestly, I think Windows Phone 8 is a better interface than Android. I'd like to see iOS a bit more customizable, and be able to hide the icons or at least do something different on a screen or two. And personally I would prefer a bigger screen. I'm not always in the thinner is better camp. I like something that is easy to hold and not so slipper or thin that I have to be constantly conscious about holding it securely. I personally find the iPhone 5 to be slippery.

I realize all of this is subjective and a matter of personal preference. I like the two forward facing speakers on the HTC One. I like the curved back, as I did one of the rumored iPhone designs pictured here a while back. There was a rumor of a curved iPhone design and I liked the mock up.

Ah... true.

Shame there wasn't some other company around in 2003 who could compete with iTunes to prevent people from making the mistake of tying up all their media with Apple.

Same for accessories. Why is it that there are barely any MicroUSB speaker docks and other accessories?

iOS has long become a liability rather than an advantage. Of course, those who have not tried, say, Android would not have realized this.

People are buying iPhones at the average rate of over 400,000 every day.

Certainly those people have met some other person on the planet who has an opinion about Android. Ask a friend if they have to.

The iPhone is in its 6th year and Android is in its 5th year. It's not like either platform is a brand new untested technology.

The point is... there have been plenty of opportunities to try Android. If they still prefer iOS... it's not the end of the world.
