It's obvious to me that the blackout curtains are required so that little children don't get sight of Apple's new iPorn channel on AppleTV. The curtains will stay long after Sunday, alas. :D

It's retraining for those who didn't get the memo to use the new cover sheet on their tps reports

Ya know, the speculation about 10th anniversary edition iPod does appeal to me as feasible. However the iCloud only variant with no internal storage (or perhaps caching a few minutes) isn't something I'd like. I find it improbable that I wouldn't find myself on a place with no connection occasionally. Plenty of countries people go on holidays (need I point out that alot of people bring their iPods on a holiday?) to that haven't got wireless access everywhere.

Also I'm not sure, but I guess this would cut back it's batterylife.

If this information is correct, then I expect to see a major anniversary celebration that takes the store back 10 years...

Old iMacs, PowerMacs, first gen iPods etc all around the place, with some of the original graphics and maybe swap some tables and stuff out (though unlikely given the manpower they will have)... They would still operate as a normal store, but maybe a week or more or having the stores themed as they were 10 years ago??

I seriously doubt any new product or anything like that - but the staff they have working, the curtains, the long overnight hours etc could all easily be attributed to major setup for a celebratory event... Also explains locking away everyones phones, the NDA and the extreme secrecy...

A mini Mac Pro would be nice, I know it won't happen but it would be nice. The current one is just too large for my downstairs office

'Roles', no phones, black curtains? Sounds like a "kit off, let's go to town" scenario to me.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

Makes sense to be iCloud (though I'm never right). Announce it now so devs can see and integrate apps for wwdc for sep iPhone launch.

Since the white macbook is long overdue for a refresh, could it be that? I've heard rumours that they're bringing back the blackbook, maybe all the secrecy and black curtain stuff could be because of that?

That would be amazing.

I bet it's just a new color scheme for the store. All black look to match upcoming products color scheme shift.

Perhaps this rumor is just someone's desperate attempt to prop up AAPL stock which is falling like a brick today?

Nope, but closer to the truth than most.

Someone will announce his retirement coupled with a big sale to celebrate his contributions to Apple.

Standard team meeting + Family House/FOH change. Happens usually before Summer and before Back to School.

very likely more this than some big hardware change. Perhaps some advance on whatever the whole icloud thing is.

They did the black curtain for the meeting for that Joint Venture thing also. Although in a few places some folks got snaps from between the gaps so it didn't work 100%

Also given that a lot of stores are in malls, the curtain could be simply to keep the mall walkers etc from banging on the doors disturbing things

This is well though out and very logical. Great read..

UNUSUAL SHORT NOTICE -- This meeting had a one-week notice. That is not normal. Most 'all-hands' meetings have a one-month notice.
WHAT IT MEANS: Something has changed recently in the marketplace and Apple is responding.

LOTS OF OVERNIGHT EMPLOYEES -- Includes all visuals staff, a manager, a business team member, a few Genius team members, one back-of-house employee, and a few generic Apple specialists. This overnight includes more employees than normal. It also includes more hours. The iPad 2 launch overnight had very few employees, no black curtains during the night, and no cell phones taken away.
WHAT IT MEANS: Lots of bodies means lots of physical things manually being replaced. Note it says "all visuals staff" will be there. Add the black curtains and you can expect to see a store on Sunday that looks very different from the day before. Definitely new banners and new main displays.

NOT A LOT OF GENIUSES ON HAND -- Only a few Geniuses will be there overnight.
WHAT IT MEANS: Not a lot of technical information will be learned overnight so no new technology will be released.

ONLY ONE BACK-OF-HOUSE EMPLOYEE
WHAT IT MEANS: Only one person working on stocking means that there will be no new physical item that will go on sale...or at least not in stock.

NO MAJOR APPLE ANNOUNCEMENT PLANNED BEFOREHAND Apple doesn't have any media events planned this week.
WHAT IT MEANS: Nothing ground-breaking new will be released on Sunday.

US ONLY This is only happening in the US.
WHAT IT MEANS: It only applies to the US.

SUMMARY:
  • No new hardware
  • Nothing new physically to sell
  • Doesn't require the geniuses to absorb much info
  • Lots of changes to banners and displays
  • Response to something that has recently changed in the marketplace
  • US Only

ANSWER: A T-mobile iPhone is the only thing I can think of that would satisfy all these variables.

EDIT: T-Mobile Plan Updates Set for May 22 (http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/14/t-mobile-baking-fresh-prepaid-plans-may-22-adds-more-4g-data-fo)

Could that not just be for contact-less payment systems? My credit card allows me to pay for small items just by waving it over a reader. No need to swipe the magnetic strip or insert the chip into a reader and it only randomly asks me to insert my PIN.
