Huh, good article / interview. I always knew the retail bods had it pretty bad. Saying that though, they always appeared to be the most fun crowd.

New York City!
Blah blah blah.... there is always someone who is going to complain, and retail is retail.... it's seldom glamorous, even if you're working on 5th Ave in NYC. For the most part Apple's a great company, and because it's so great, complaints, problems, and unhappy people will always be in the news because their awesome track record make the exceptions more notable. And even though it says it's "cult-like" I think when you understand the trade-offs and the benefits, you see past all the stuff that's in the news and realize you're simply better off with their products for the exceptional hardware, software, and dependability. And for anything to work, like really WORK, there's going to need to be some rules, often times uncomfortable ones, and you just need to deal with it.

In the article on Business Insider, the specialist that was interviewed mentioned that AppleCare didn't cover accidental damage. They were talking about phones when he mentioned AppleCare. Doesn't AppleCare+ cover 2 incidents of accidental damage for 2 years? Is it different overseas? Or was the specialist talking about AppleCare for Mac which doesn't cover accidental damage....?

"leaving many unable to afford the products they sell."

What the h*** kind of metric is that? Should they be paid enough to afford one of everything? A Mac Pro w/ Thunderbolt Display? Every new model?

The irony is that with all the hand-wringing, the demand to join Apple retail is still the stuff of business studies

I have the impression the UK is a quite tense environment right now, at least for the next month or so. Second milestone.

Having trouble believing any of the positives or negatives mentioned in this story. Discount on AAPL shares? I don't even think that's legal in the states but maybe legal in the UK.
I work for a big tech company, and I get to buy its shares at a 15% discount. Obviously, there is a limit on how much I can buy, but it is a nice little bonus. And my company offers this in Europe and in the US.

Me too, limit is 10% of salary is the max.
Apple "do" Allow ESPP for full time employees in the UK (corp, no idea on retail).

(the best thing for composers since the Atari ST home computer from the 1980s/90s, IMHO)

The Amiga was better. I say this as an old Atari 1040ST owner.

Blame that communist Henry Ford for introducing the idea that the people who build and sell their products should be able to afford them.

Any place but here or there....
Geez, working with the public is very hard and stressful. And working at Apple sounds equally as stressful and awful too. I always try to make it a good experience for the specialist even when I return something. Latest example was the iPP return, the fellow who helped me with the purchase stopped by and said, "Oh it did not work out?" And within earshot of his manager I repeated, "No. This wasn't working with my particular school needs and university online set up. You were great though. Do you have a business card?"

I know these folks are treated like absolute crap sometimes. I always try to make it easy for people in retail unless they give me an attitude off the bat. Then I find their manager and/or say something to make them know I understand what they're doing. When Apple tried to withhold money from my cancelled 21.5" iMac order last year, I purposely went higher and this senior rep did right by me. And I praised this person several times (and to Tim Cook too.) So now I have someone in my corner if I ever need help.

Working at Apple is stressful enough and Tim and Angela should do anything and everything to make their employees want to work hard and do their very best. Incentives, bonuses and a higher starting salary should be a given. Ditto for sick time / time off and other benefits. Rather than putting billions into crap like Beats, put that money into your own employees and quality control.

... Access to Tim Cook is a big honor indeed, it gets one's name recognized which can lead to bigger and better things ...

Not likely, if you read the Macrumors summary ...

... The worker claims that although positions in the company's stores are highly prized, Apple doesn't promote internally in the UK either, and that staff are prevented from transferring from part-time to full-time employment as a matter of policy.

Huh, good article / interview. I always knew the retail bods had it pretty bad. Saying that though, they always appeared to be the most fun crowd.

Agree. I've never had anything but the utmost respect and courtesy for the fantastic retail staff who do a terrific job in a tough environment and for relatively low pay. They're a pretty great bunch of people and it's sad if they don't make much more than minimum wage. Apple pull your finger out and do better! I know cities like London, Sydney and New York are some of the most expensive places to live in the world and the retail staff deserve to afford a decent standard of living.

It sickens me that there are jerks out there that take their problems out on Apple staff that are just doing their job and don't make the policies.

If you're not happy with a decision you should research your rights and try again. Persistence usually pays off as does going to a flagship store if you can. Other options include opening a support case through AppleCare on the phone.

Of the dozens (perhaps hundreds) of interactions I've had with Apple staff I've only had one or two less than stellar experiences and I believe one of them was from a manager not the friendly underlings.

Blame that communist Henry Ford for introducing the idea that the people who build and sell their products should be able to afford them.

Um, Ford's decision to pay his employees $5/day wasn't "introducing the idea" that his employees should be able to afford the cars they built.

It was because he couldn't afford the massive cost of turnover and training that came with the mundane factory work. He decided to double what competitors paid, which pretty much eliminated turnover and in turn increased demand to work for Ford's company. This allowed him to increase production, profit, and cut Model-T prices. Only then did the Model-T become "every man's car."

Money talks, bud.

Try working for the government, then you'll have some room to complain about threats and abuse from the public.

When u put it like that, it doesn't seem so bad.

I still have a A500 and an A1200 in the attic somewhere..

Get an emulator :D You can throw away all those Amiga's without the physical hardware remorse. and still have aces to all machines.

Money talks, bud.

You just did an excellent job of explain why paying people more money can be a good thing. Not only did people flock to his business, but they put in extra effort to stay there, and could eventually afford to buy the products they were selling, which in turn served as excellent advertisement for the company, driving it to even higher levels of success.
