With IMAP, the emails still get downloaded to your email client so you can view then offline. The only difference is there is a 'sync' process everytime you check mail so it matches all your other email clients. That's why it's a step up over POP.

Since I use .mac's other features, I'll continue to use .mac mail. I forward all my emails from gmail to mac mail. This way gmail acts as a backup service that has a copy of all my emails (and it's a great spam filter too!).

I have IMAP gmail set up on my Mac and iPhone now... I like the iPhone's interface for filing messages to folders (what Gmail has as labels). Although there are a couple of odd things:

  • I don't see a way to create a folder/label on the iPhone itself
  • if I assign a label to a message using the Gmail web interface, it doesn't move the message into a folder (one of the labels)... it just labels it and leaves it in the inbox (to actually "move" it, I have to use the iPhone?)

This does seem like it will be better than POP, but there are some quirks I'll need to get used to.

Right, your inbox is going to have EVERYTHING .... and then the folders that are made by your labels have only those messages... if you want to add a label to a message, you need to copy that message to the folder you want...

And you can't create a label from the start on your phone...

To remove it from the inbox via the web interface, you need to label it AND 'archive' it (you don't have to label it to archive it, but then it doesn't go into a folder of your choosing.)

The way GMail IMAP works is a bit different, because IMAP uses folders and GMail uses labels (tags). But once you understand the difference between folders and labels, it's easy. The inbox is really just another built-in label (best way to think of it.) The archive contains ALL of your emails, labelled or not. In the GMail web interface, to 'archive' a message means to remove the inbox label (while not modifying any other labels attached to the message.)

The iPhone 'move' function actually labels the email, and archives it at the same time.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks.

On my computer, I like to keep my Inbox clear and file anything important away... so this other way seems odd. I like the way the iPhone labels and archives it.

Not using IMAP. The whole point is if you delete/copy/move/mark as read on one computer (or iPhone) then it affects the server copy, and thus all the computers you use for accessing the account.

I AM STILL WAITING FOR IMAP!!
If you aren't using the US language setting, try switching to that. They haven't updated all the languages (e.g. British English) to include the new setting yet.

with Hamburglar.
isn't it GMail's big point that you don't have to ever delete anything?

I want to be able to get IMAP GMail on my iPhone and in Mail, but I always want the GMail interface to keep the message, not delete it when I hit delete in Mail. Like an web-based archive, I suppose.

Is this even possible??

yes, you can archive emails on your iphone (rather than delete them) by going into settings and making the delete folder act as the "all mail" folder. settings, then mail, then gmail, then advanced, i think.

Interesting - our nonprofit uses Google Apps, which still currently limits mailbox sizes to 2GB and doesn't yet appear to have the IMAP option. I wonder how long it will take for these changes (the new 4+ GB account size and IMAP) to matriculate over there? Presumably, they're launching these on the "free" GMail accounts in case of bugs, but I'm really just guessing here.

I've always been a POP junkie - keeping all of my email carefully archived for over 10 years. The few times I've tried using IMAP, my email clients weren't really up to the challenge (early versions of Eudora, Thunderbird and Mail.app). Maybe once I upgrade to Leopard, I'll try out IMAP and Mail.app again, especially now that my primary Gmail account can POP retrieve from almost everywhere and therefore I'd only have to open a single IMAP account in Mail, maybe it's worth a second look...

How is this going to work with regards to disk space on the ipod touch. I would like to use mail to access gmail, but I don't want the email filling up the disk space. Presumably if I delete a message on the ipod it will delete from gmail and from my macbook's mail program.
The only dirty solution I can think of is to delete the accoun off the ipod every week or so and re-set it up.

Of course when I see the settings available to me it might all become obvious!

Nice. Mine has the IMAP option. Does anyone know when the cut-off is of accounts that got it and didn't get it?

date wise? there isn't one, my account is mid 2004 and is not yet enabled. But my settings are at UK english, which I've read affects it. Changing it to US doesn't help like it has done on previous feature rollouts.

I worked for Google when Gmail rolled out in '04. Not anymore, and I still don't have IMAP. Maybe they're punishing me? :D

I use Google Apps on a half dozen domains and I don't have it yet, but it is coming this week along with the rest of the GMail accounts. My regular GMail accounts don't have it yet either, for that matter. We just need to wait a few more days. But Apps is getting it at the same time.

As for storage, in January '08 both Apps accounts and regular GMail accounts will be upgraded to 6GB of storage, and from that point on Apps accounts will keep pace with regular GMail accounts. We will no longer be stuck at a lower storage limit.

.mac is mostly useful for sync features which are still lacking from anyone else. If I was a .mac user, this would not change anything IMO;

Excellent news! Now I'll know exactly when I have mail for my 5 email accounts (2 gmail, 2 .mac, 1 aol) through my iPhone. Now, I'll have to make sure our Lotus Notes admin at work doesn't figure out how to get iPhone to connect to our Notes server so my iPhone does not get cluttered up by work stuff.

I have had gmail since the beginning, used it the whole time, and I do not have IMAP yet! I am logging into gmail settings several times a day waiting anxiously.

This may be what saves my iphone for me!
