It's going to be touchscreen! The model number starts with a 'K'! Ahhh! ;):D

I hardly think that if Apple were to do a touchscreen notebook, it would be the cheapest in the range. It would, of course, be the most expensive, having the most expensive new tech in it. Anyone heard of the iPod Touch?

Although, it is a bit odd to have such a jump in price. There's now US$200 difference in the current models, to have double that does seem odd. But, a plausible explanation could be that Apple are trying to get more of a hold of a slightly lower end of the market, by supplementing their range with a cheaper, no frills version of their product. Its exactly the same thing they did with their iPod range when they introduced the shuffle - a much, much cheaper product, but with not as much fancy frills. This is what I think the US$899 MB would be.

What I hope, being an Australian, is that Apple doesn't kill us with a dodgy conversion in pricing, purely because the Aussie dollar is at a low at the moment. When I bought my MBP, the shop I bought it from paid more for it than the retail price in the US! There was about a AU$300 discrepancy in the exchange rates! So I hope that Apple adjust prices here in Australia, like they will in the US.

there hasnt been a SINGLE picture leak.. NOT ONE (please let me know if there is one)

there is ALWAYS some kind of photo leak. ie. iPod, laptops, iphone

so far, tablet = none

A tablet is not plausible a touch netbook is.

Hmm...right.
So, is $899, like, er, £450 Or £899, in ripoff Britain?
[XE currently puts it at £515...but sheah, right, like that will ever happen =P].

Yeah I'm curious about potential UK prices. Don't forget all our advertised prices include Value Added Tax (at 17.5%) where as US prices do not (although their tax is not quite as high anyway!).

Based on that, I would estimate £649 all in. £599 if we're very lucky.

Too expensive for a 'netbook', they are selling at around £299 or going for free with broadband contracts.

My guess is, if the numbers are true, that the 899 notebook is missing an optical drive and lacks backlit keys. Furthermore, it's possible it doesn't have an iSight either. Those couple things with additional tech specs could account for the price drop.

In an economic crisis Apple would bump up the prices of the base Mac Book $200? That does not make any sense....

I just want to buy my first MB tomorrow...c'mon Apple! Save me from this POS Vista!

Frankly I do find it rather hard to gulp.

Firstly a $400 difference doesn't justify even if it's another class of products. Secondly both the low end and mid range MB see big price increases with the high end gone or the high end is dearer by $100. Lastly, these analysts are everywhere and seemingly some school kid thought it'll be fun to post some crap which resembles these analysts crap!

its a shame how i bought my 1000 dollar macbook in august and 2 months later they come out with a new one

As a Macrumors reader you knew you should have waited. I've been waiting since March to upgrade and have been living without an optical drive. Sucks, but the wait is worth it.

I totally agree. Even the TUAW predictions referenced a tablet. Its not going to happen (at least not tomorrow). The invitation specifically says Notebooks. Moreover, Apple wouldn't release this revolutionary product at a media event like this. If anything it will be a MacWorld release.

If these model numbers are legitimate, The K model letter definitely stands out.

If I had to guess I would say that the K is going to be the only plastic laptop.

I too am also surprised that we may not see a price drop in the low-end MBP.

I can see one of those prices being for a Tablet.

Apple is not ready yet for a tablet. OSX is not ready and the technology is not ready. Apple will not release a tablet until the time is right. As much as I would like one Apple is not ready. Apple is a game changer and until the perfected it they will not release it.

A touch netbook on the other hand the time is right. They have the perfect OS for it and they have perfected the hardware. It's possible to have some sort of convertible touch netbook.

The student discount is 10% right?

Actually if I recall correctly I believe it may just be a flat $100 off Macbooks and $200 off MBPs.

Not 100% sure but that is what I recall being told at the apple store.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

This price idea would be best:

$799 for base MacBook
$999 for middle MacBook
$1199 for high-end MacBook
$1599 for MacBook Air
$2299 for MacBook Air SSD
$1799 for base 15" MacBook Pro
$1999 for middle 15" MacBook Pro
$2299 for 17" MacBook Pro

I think it's very feasible that we're not seeing a price drop in the MBPs because they could now come STANDARD with Blu Ray drives... they are "Pro" models.

I just saw a Sony Vaio with a blu ray player at eCost for $899... it's not as expensive as everyone seems to think. Of course, I think the issue is with the drive's size and whether or not it's slot loading...

I for one sure hope for the blu ray option. I may actually stop habitually upgrading my MacBooks every god damn time Apple releases another.

Yep.

If Apple keeps the MBP at $1,999...they better offer some good features(Bluray, high res screen, decent gpu, etc) and not just a slight performance boost.

You should be so lucky!

Slot loading Blu-Ray drives are not cheap $900 for this example:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/xcart1/product.php?productid=17116

I'm sure as a bulk OEM purchase Apple will get them much cheaper, but not enough to make it anywhere near as low as even double the price of a CD/DVD burner.

Not sure why everyone is so optimistic about slot loading Blu-Ray, it might be an option on the high end or as a BTO config, but you can't expect to pay normal laptop prices and get one 'thrown in'.

Yep Apple always likes the next step to be a easy one so they aren't going to have a $400 dollar one right at the start. I'm sure they know that $200 steps get them the maximum sale per customer.

Ok so we have to sources one admits to just making up placeholders to be ready for the release the other is unknown. Both with info that doesn't really fit.

Page 2 calling I want my "news" back.
