Guys, i have a mid 2013 Macbook Air (8GB RAM, 512 SSD, 1.3 Ghz, I-5) and yesterday i did the mistake of upgrading from OSX Yosemite to OsSierra (please note i never upgraded to ElCaptain and skipped it completely).

Now whenever i am watching a video [can be flash or any other video on a website using Chrome) , after a few minutes (5-10'ish), the mac restarts itself and i have to login again and all the apps that were open earlier have now terminated.

This is very frustrating, i lost all my work files, due to this and please suggest a fix for this.

It has been going on since yesterday and has happened to me 5 times by now as i type this message here.
[doublepost=1474835653][/doublepost]I really need some help :(

If all else fails, I recommend making a bootable Sierra USB flash drive and performing a clean installation rather than an upgrade because from what I've been reading about Sierra in the past couple of days, some people have been having problems with upgrades which are fixed after clean installations.

Is your Mac very hot when that happens?
No

Try testing in a new User. You can use Guest or create a new User in System Preferences.
Thanks, it has temporarily solved the problem by making a test account, but its not a permanent fix and i hate switching between two :(

@johnjey well, there are different ways in which you can make a bootable USB drive of Sierra:

http://www.macworld.com/article/309...-a-bootable-macos-sierra-installer-drive.html

http://lifehacker.com/how-to-make-a-bootable-macos-sierra-usb-flash-drive-1786853248

http://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-create-a-bootable-usb-installer-for-macos-sierra/

The easiest solution would be to use an application like DiskMaker or the one mentioned in the article after downloading Sierra from the App Store.

As for Time Machine, you'll need to get an external hard disk and make a Time Machine backup if you don't want to lose your data, however if you don't have anything important to keep, then don't bother and just go ahead and wipe the drive and install Sierra on a clean slate.

if your air does not get to hot (to be absolutely sure you should monitor your temperatures with istat menu)
its probably permissions issue.
I recommend clean install.

If that fixes it, it is likely you have some sort of launch or startup item running in the main account that is causing a conflict with Sierra. Run the app Etrecheck from within the main (old) account. That will create an anonymized report showing everything running. Post that report here so we can have a look.

/Library/LaunchAgents/Swapper.plist

You have a LOT of third party items running there, so this is going to be a bit of a chore to nail down. I'll run through some suggestions.

Any idea what this Swapper is? I never heard of it and Google isn't showing much other than other people with Etrecheck reports showing the same restart you are. Go to the folder /Library/LaunchAgents/ and remove it.

Next I would uninstall Clean My Mac. That app often causes more problems that it solves and has caused crashes like this for other members here... so ditch it.

All launch and startup items are run from one of these folders, or from a user login item in System Preferences > Users & Groups. You can kind of match up this list with the Etrecheck report.

Code:
~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is your users folder)
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/Extensions/

The good news is this does not happen in the test (temp) account. So that means you can limit your troubleshooting to either the users ~/Library/LaunchAgents folder or the login items in Users & Groups. All the other items are system wide launch items, so they would still be running in the test account... so they cannot be the issue. It has to be something in one of the two user specific sections.

So focus your efforts here...

User Login Items:

Flux Application (/Applications/Flux.app)

Alfred Application (/Applications/Alfred.app)

TotalFinder Application (/Incompatible Software/TotalFinder.app)

XtraFinder Application (/Applications/XtraFinder.app)

BetterSnapTool Application (/Applications/BetterSnapTool.app)

Default Folder X Helper Application (/Library/PreferencePanes/Default Folder X.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Default Folder X Helper.app)

Quicksilver Application (/Applications/Quicksilver.app)

BetterTouchTool Application (/Applications/BetterTouchTool.app)

XtraFinder Application (/Applications/XtraFinder.app)

Content Manager Assistant Application (/Applications/CMA.app)

... and here.

User Launch Agents:

[loaded] com.adobe.ARM.[...].plist (2013-07-05) [Support]

[failed] com.citrixonline.GoToMeeting.G2MUpdate.plist (2014-09-22) [Support]

[failed] com.facebook.videochat.[redacted].plist (2014-08-17)

[failed] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.scheduledScan.plist (2013-07-11)

[failed] com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2Helper.trashWatcher.plist (2013-07-11)

[running] com.spotify.webhelper.plist (2016-09-25) [Support]

There is just no easy way to do this. You just have to keep removing items and rebooting to test until you pin it down.

What I like to do it printout the Etrecheck report as a worksheet and mark off what you have done. Then remove half of each group at a time until you find the offender. Once you have narrowed it down, you can add things back one at a time and continue testing.

Sep 30, 2016, 07:11:08 PM Self test - passed

So focus your efforts here...

... and here.

Is your Mac very hot when that happens?
no

I TRIED all your steps and now mac automatically logs me out within 20 seconds of watching any full-screen video :(, heres my new ETRECHECK LOG:

I think you missed some of the steps I suggested, because I still see that Swapper launch item and all the startup items from before. Go through my earlier post line by line and get all those user launch and startup items removed.

Again... if you do not have this issue in the test account, it is one of these user launch or startup items.

Oh ok, all i did was entered into the folder as you suggested and deleted all files, looks like there has to be another way to search for these files and i am not able to find it so far

Everything will be either in Users & Groups > Login items (you have a bunch there), or in one of these folders.

Code:
~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is your users folder)
/Library/LaunchAgents
/Library/LaunchDaemons
/Library/StartupItems
/System/Library/Extensions/

What might help you navigate it to mouse select from this post (like ~/Library/LaunchAgents).... then right click, then Services, then Reveal in Finder. That will open the folder in Finder.

User Login Items:

Flux Application (/Applications/Flux.app)

Alfred Application (/Applications/Alfred.app)

TotalFinder Application (/Incompatible Software/TotalFinder.app)

XtraFinder Application (/Applications/XtraFinder.app)

BetterSnapTool Application (/Applications/BetterSnapTool.app)

Default Folder X Helper Application (/Library/PreferencePanes/Default Folder X.prefPane/Contents/Resources/Default Folder X Helper.app)

Quicksilver Application (/Applications/Quicksilver.app)

BetterTouchTool Application (/Applications/BetterTouchTool.app)

XtraFinder Application (/Applications/XtraFinder.app)

You are making some good progress here. You got rid of all the user launch items. But you still have a bunch of login items in the account. You need to open System Preferences, then in the Users & Groups section for your account, go to Login items like in my screenshot and remove everything.

So is it fixed now, or still restarting?

If it is still restarting, the above user items could cause trouble in the main account because they would not be present in the test account.

Unfortunately , despite all of this, the PROBLEM IS STILL there and it is very frustrating that Apple is sleeping over it and no fix has been issued.

I removed these 2 as well now and testing it, will report soon

UPDATE: THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE...guys please do not waste your time doing all the steps i did, this is something bigger in the OS and has to do with user permission or something else, but i am really not looking forward to buying a 3 TB External HDD and copy-pasting all my data and then re-install Yosemite or any of that, Apple better come out with a fix soon

I know it is frustrating to pin down, but this is something specific to your account if it does not happen in the test account and not something wrong on Apple's end (other than I suppose you could blame them for your software not being compatible).
