If this thread started off with "my friend tried to ride his iPhone 4S like a skateboard, grinding a rail..." I would believe the pictures.

Strange things happen... I can see the screen shattering from a 4 foot fall... but to have the iPhone BEND?!

It's stainless steel, that phone must have fallen from the roof or was hit by hammer to bend like that. I dropped my phone numerous times on asphalt/ceramic tiles - there were only scratches and dings on bezel. Nice 4 feet fairy tale.

agree with others...no way that was from a 4 foot drop even if it was not in a case. I have personally seen an iphone run over in an otterbox defender and not even crack.

that is a common misconception people have.

"OtterBox warranty does not, under any circumstance, cover the replacement or cost of any electronic device or personal property inside or outside of the Defender case"

NO way in hell would it even bend like that in a Otterbox Defender if that's what he had. I had a commuter on my iphone 4 and dropped it twice from ear level and the only thing that broke was the bottom part of the case. I can't even picture it bending with a commuter case either.

Apple Genius: You Dropped THIS from 4 feet in a otterbox? Sounds hard to believe
Friend: Well it happened...
Apple Genius: Well it'll be $150 either way, do you have AppleCare+?

Not to call the OP a liar or anything but I call BS on this one. Somethings missing. A 4 ft drop onto tile should not do this with an otterbox. If the Otterbox was improperly installed it could do this. I know sometimes I can put the back plastic part of the Otterbox on wrong and not realize it. I've had some crazy drops with my iPhone 4 and Otterbox and it is had no incidents.

Somethings missing or it was 1 in a 10,000 of a drop that hit on some weak spot. Makes no sense to me.

Ouch! Tough break, no pun intended. Initially, I find it hard to believe that a simple 4 feet drop would cause that amount of damage to a phone while encased in an OBD. However, I have no reason to doubt the incident, as others have.

It's simply one of those things. Bad timing, wrong place at the right time. My iP5 is currently housed in an OBD. I don't doubt that my iP5 may receive damage during an accidental drop. All I can do is attempt to limit the damage and whatever will happen, will happen.

I think it's possible.

I can see that phone falling 4ft onto tile and breaking like that, after the piano the person was carrying in the other hand landed on top of it.

While highly improbable, it's possible the phone really did break like the OP said, but I have to wonder if the case it was in was a real Otterbox or if it was a counterfit or knockoff. That would explain a lot.

Not as bad as OP but it happened from about 4 feet with the otterbox defender on!

What I find comical about this thread is . . . Some one totally destroyed their iPhone and for the large part, many are countering the OP's accounting of the unfortunate incident, as if it has some detrimental impact on their well being.

Here we go again. No photos of the Otterbox Defender djn4eva. Just the phone. Why do you people take off the Defender and take a picture instead of leaving it on and taking some pictures ? :p
