Can't find the Kingston in Australia so that's the closest 2133 ram I could find... Or are the Crucial Ballistix Sport / Kingston HyperX Impact better in regards to how they handle heat ?

I bought the hyper X today in Melbourne.

And of course eBay where it's cheaper

Brilliant, I love you! Bought from PC Case Gear before, always had good service.

I also just managed to find the Crucial Ballistix Sport 1866 CL10 on Amazon for $225 AUD delivered. Is the Hyper X 2133 CL11 worth it for an extra $100 AUD (~$72 USD)?

I paid $135 AUD for 2 X 8gb crucial ballistix sport 1866 cl10, don't pay $225!

Even cheaper for the crucial locally

https://www.ramcity.com.au/buy/crucial-ballistix-16gb-2x-8gb-kit-pc3-14900-unbuff/2xBLS8G3N18AES4

The hyper X runs at CL10 at 1867mhz as well but in this iMac it runs at 2133mhz.

Benchmarks show faster results from the Kingston then from crucial

Will u see that from day to day usage depends on your usage.

But if u don't appreciate the boost in speeds then U might as well buy cheaper 1600mhz memory imo

Omg haha I suck at this. You got a link for that by chance?

Edit: I messed up, that was 1600 ram. It's $280 delivered on Amazon for 4x8gb 1866 so that works out with your pricing. May as well just spring the extra $40 and get the Kingston HyperX.

Look at the memory score, ca. 3700 vs 4800. Nice! To my knowledge, and not 100% sure, but I think Lightroom constantly writes to memory

Have you done any extended testing on the Kingston HyperX 2133's. Are they stable as far as you can tell?

Thanks.

Other than running some of the other benchmark tools for 3D graphics for a couple hours no. But no issues so far.

I'm running 4 x 8gb kingston 2133mhz ram on a top spec system. No issues so far.

I ordered four of them too today.

Just found out that my iMac's 2 x 4 GB RAM is running at 1867 MHz in my MacBook Pro Late 2011 without any issues. As I wrote before the 2 x 8 GB at 1333 MHz of that MacBook did not work in my iMac.

Ya the Kingston is good choice ram for a good cost. It's also the fastest u can get for this machine. It runs 2133 @ CL11. I don't think u get a a CL any faster with 2133 for 204pin ram

What would be better? That Kingston ram @ 2133mhz 16gb worth, or 24gb at 1867mhz with the corsair ballistix mixed with the stock Apple ram?? So essentially is it better to have 16gb at faster speed or 24gb at slower speed? I just mainly do some gaming and some light 4K video editing on iMovie.

Thanks

I've been following this thread for days. My top spec iMac will be here Monday. My first iMac w00t.

Anyway... Anyone know where, or if, I can get some 16gig sticks of that 2133 Kingston CL11? That has been determined to be the best stuff, no? I know eventually I'm going to max the machine out so I may as well pick up a couple 16gig sticks for now. I'll throw another two in when they become dirt cheap...as they will.

p.s. Thank you ericv for the testing. I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of your computer. lol

Best,
Gene

You need to make sure that when u mix corsair ballistix with Apple ram it doesn't run slower. The corsair is a CL10 module @ 1867mhz. The Apple ram is CL13 (slower) @ 1867mhz. It runs at CL10 at 1600mhz I've read.

I remember reading an earlier post that the iMac seems to favour a lower CL over a higher frequency with mixed ram.

In other words if u mix those modules together they will might overall run at a lower frequency.

I'm not sure.

Keep in mind though that the 2133mhz Kingston has given the higher speed memory score when run alone.

2133mhz > 1866mhz > 1600mhz assuming small differences in CL

Eg 1600mhz CL9 would be faster than 1867mhz CL13 stock Apple ram

So - why then are we all not buying 1600mhz CAS9 RAM - when it's the same price or cheaper than the 1886 @ CAS10 etc?

Just curious - what CAS point is the cutoff where the mhz speed overlaps - if that makes sense :)
