@ericv if you have the time and inclination to do so, would it be possible to test a pair of sticks from each of your 3 sets of memory, installed alongside the original Apple memory? Others on this thread have reported a slowdown when mixing faster RAM with the Apple RAM due to mismatched timing. A quick look at what System Information / About This Mac reports would be excellent. :)

Still trying to figure out which set I want to get to pair with the original 8 GB from Apple, not to mention which may be in stock! o_O

Okay so my tricked out iMac is ordered and should be here next week! I ordered it with 8GB and want to upgrade to 24GB; I'd just like to match to 1867MHz rather than the top end 2133MHz gear you guys have been testing out.

The only place I've found so far is here: http://www.mrmemory.co.uk/memory-ram-upgrades/apple/imac/retina-5k-27-inch-late-2015-4.0ghz-core-i7

Is there anywhere else recommended for UK delivery or is this okay to order? Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks all!
don't think that good idea because would run 1600 ghz 24GB not 1867 that if install 16GB of 1867 plus memory come with the mac which run 1600.

The memory on the Mr Memory website is described as "DDR3 PC3-14900 1866MHz 204-pin SODIMM". There's no mention of the CAS Latency which I've seen mentioned. Anyone any ideas? Ideally needs to be a UK site and I don't want the speed dropping to 1600MHz if it doesn't match.

too good to be true?

I decided to look through Amazon Canada again just in case I could find anything. the first thing I noticed is that the ballistics sport 1866 RAM went up in price by $50. it's out of stock and on backorder but, you snooze you lose.

so I started looking at all the g.skill RAM and surprisingly I found a seller that had some in stock. they had two sets of 16 gigabytes and surprisingly the price is on par with the Ballistix sport from b &h in.the United States. so again, it said they had 32 gigabytes and it will be at my house within 4 days. the specifications are the exact same as the Ballistix sport.

hit's from a third party seller in Canada, so I.have to admit I am expecting to get a letter saying that they are back ordered and it will not ship right away but one can hope.

sorry for my punctuation I'm dictating this to my phone in a public place.

Here you go, both benchmarks taken after a fresh reboot.

Thanks for this information. Question for you- for someone who does a lot of photography editing (Photoshop and LR), no gaming do you think it is worth it to get the fast 2133 ram versus the 1867 ram? I see the numbers and it looks like there isn't a huge difference but then I looked at the memory performance which looks better with the faster ram. I'm just not sure how significant these numbers are when it comes to my usage if the computer. Thanks so much.

I am not sure how significant they are either. I doubt anyone would really notice the difference.

Thanks, this is excellent. :) So at least we know that the 2133 MHz Kingston RAM will not cause the memory controller to slow everything down to 1600 MHz when paired with the Apple RAM. That's good news.

RAM of all types is certainly getting scarce, but as luck would have it, Amazon just got this Crucial memory back in stock. It is CL13 just like the Apple (Hynix) RAM, so should match perfectly with that. I jumped on it and plan to combine with the Apple RAM for 24 GB until sometime in the future when 64 GB becomes reasonably priced.

(EDIT: wow, wonder if I got the only pair they had? The Amazon page now shows a third party seller, with Amazon.com themselves showing as temporarily out of stock again.)

Which of these do you recommend guys? I'm a bit lost and need to get sorted.

Kingston 8 GB 2133 MHz DDR3L CL11 1.35 V HyperX Impact SODIMM Memory Module - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UVOVV12/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_FqZlwb3VFHPDD

- Or -

HyperX Impact Black 16 GB 1866 MHz DDR3L CL11 SODIMM Laptop Memory Kit (2 x 8 GB) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00VMCUBK4/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_duZlwb6HWQ5EK

The confusing thing is they are both CL11, however the price for maxing out to 32GB is so close considering one is 1867mhz and the other 2133mhz?

I have 8GB stock in my new iMac, I'm happy to either go 32GB and just sell the 8GB or just grab 16GB for a total of 24GB. Budget is around £150 - £200. I just want whatever option to be good and to match.

Edit: I'm in the UK. Also feel free to direct me to something I've not seen yet. :)

I got these (also based in the UK): http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Hy...sp0Lp8L&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160,160_

32GB total...

should be getting my iMac today and also the RAM delivered today too... hopefully it all works out as I agree, it's confusing.

If the price is close buy the Kingstone 2133 Mhz

sorry for going slightly off topic:

so i've ordered some of the hyperx 2133 for my new retina 27" imac. rather than sell on the 2 x 4GB apple ram that's coming with my 27" retina imac, would I be able to use it in my early 2011 macbook pro (which has two so-dimm slots)? it specifies PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz type RAM on the apple website for the 2011 MBP, but could I use the PC3-14900 DDR3 1867 MHz type RAM that I'm replacing in the imac, given it's still 204 pin, so-dimm etc? And if so, what speed/latency would it clock down to?

You can try, if the machine boot, the RAM will probably run @1333 MHz CL9 :)

received iMac and RAM today...

installed it and system profiler shows it up all ok.

don't really know how to prove it runs at advertised speeds, but it's been going the whole day without issues :)

been running FCPX and iMovie and LR Raw photo processing all simultaneously to see how the iMac copes... Fans do come on for a short time (noticeable noise level), but then die down once a process completes.

go for it :)

Nope... It would propably run @1600 MHz CL10 ;) See post #275
Ah, thanks! I've read through the entire thread, but it gets confusing. :)
Ref. post #298: As far as I can see that's the same memory as this (except this seems to be the EU version). So it should work fine along side the stock ram...?

Finally got my 27 i7 395x up and running...

I'm not a big geekbench guy, but gave the free 32bit run a shot. Again, This Was The 32bit Test!

I got 4219 single and 15984 multi, for the 32 bit run. Not sure how that would correlate to 64bit? This was with Kingston 2133.

Poking around a bit, that seems about a 2-3% increase over 1867. That's certainly not a number worth breaking a sweat about, or spending more than a few bucks, IMOHO. In my case, I wanted to go to 32GB. Best 1867 I could find would cost me ~$200, and this cost me about $230. I could have searched for better prices, but I do like ordering from Amazon. So, about $30 for a 2-3% bump is... well, OK. But nothing to lose sleep over, either way. if I didn't want 32GB, I would have probably just used Apple's stock 8GB and added 16GB for about $100. That would have saved me $130, at the cost of only 2-3%, which would have been fine too. But I did want 32GB, so that's how it shook out. YMMV.

Most importantly, this system seems lighting fast against my late 2012 3.4 iMac. Good upgrade. Anyone wanna' buy a 2012 3.4 iMac? LOL

Great stuff! Thanks for that. For reference if you want to check the memory stats you just need to click the Apple logo and hit About my Mac... Memory size, type and speed is listed there.

Reckon I'll grab that 32GB 2133mhz for £170 tonight then!

After reading through this thread, searching, and comparing, I decided a few things.
  1. Amazon prices have gone way up. Newegg seems much cheaper right now.
  2. It seemed to me like the best choices on new egg were the G.Skill
Here are the 3 models I was comparing. They are either 2133 or 1866, and either CL10 or CL11. For 32GB, the prices were
  1. $162 (1866, C11)
  2. $192 (1866, C10)
  3. $217 (2133, C11)

In the end, I went with the cheapest option. At one point I had the most expensive option in my checkout, then changed my mind. Because I just spent $3k+ on the iMac, I wanted to find consolation in saving money on RAM ;)

Got my new iMac today with the default 8GB CL13 memory.
Upgraded with Kingston HyperX Impact 16GB DDR3L kit (8+8) 1866MHz CL11 (HX318LS11IBK2/16).

The default Apple RAM + Kingston HyperX Impact 1866 Works perfectly at 1867MHz. No clocking down to 1600MHz.
