There are several well documented cases of certain Japanese monks going without food or water for ten days. There is a particular spirtitual journey that a few go through where they spend several years running great distances while praying. The denial of food and water is the final part of the journey and is usually spent isolated in a dark room in meditation. They are also allowed a tiny amount of water for mouthwash once a day that is collected. By the tenth day their saliva is usually very thick and dark. If they manage to survive the entire journey they are considered to be living saints. One man managed to go through the whole process twice. The normal caloric intake for many monks at certain monestaries is less than 800 kilocalories per day.
