No game is worth this.

I know it's from the Daily Mail but it is the only English Newspapers that I found with the story.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...ch-linesman-beaten-death-shocking-attack.html

Sunday by an amateur football match here in the Netherlands a linesmans was attacked by several players, and later died in hospital. His name Richard Nieuwenhuizen he was 41 years old.
So far three players are in police cells as a result, and more are expected to follow.

Amateur football here in the Netherlands has always been violent, but it has been getting worst over the last few years.

Wasn't it a kids match, 15 and 16 year olds?

The book should be thrown at every one of those runts

EDIT: On another note, City are out...as expected. Also, Wenger please ship out Ramsey, Arshavin, Chamakh and Gervinho ASAP. Thanks.

Champions of England and Champions of Europe out in the group stages for the first time ever.

Bye bye Chelsea and City. Lucks run out. Welcome Celtic. Incredible achievement.

I had to chuckle at the quote by Balotelli's agent claiming that Balotelli is "as valuable as the Mona Lisa". Despite the fact that football players are worth sickening amounts of money these days, he managed to compare our Italian friend to something that's worth far more than any footballer.

Australia...? about 2.00 mins in... then specualtion about him being player owner of NY Cosmos...

I (and many MLS fans) don't have all that much respect for the current incarnation of the Cosmos. It's another big marketing exercise with lots of hot air and no reality to it, at least yet. We still don't even know if the Cosmos will get an MLS franchise. But its already more of a media darling (despite not having even kicked a ball in training, or even putting together a team) than teams like Columbus who are founding members of the league and have won trophies.

Beckham is finally past his Euro sell-by date, at least for the kinds of contender teams he'd want to be a part of. If he wants to keep playing I would think it's going to be in the A-League or Asia.

I honestly never rated Celtic as a European contender, and I'm still wondering whether they're really that good or just hard-working and lucky.

As for Man City and Chelsea, one can only laugh, given the amount of money they're spending. Too bad Man Utd made it through this time.

I do continue to find it funny that Chelsea fans keep after Benitez, while there isn't a peep of complaint against the man who hired him. It's almost like Chelsea fans think Benitez just broke into the training ground one night and moved into RDM's office without Abramovich knowing what was going on.

Probably because they know he's the hand that feeds them. If it wasn't for him, Chelski would be back in the football dark ages. Playing mid-table football and hoping for Europa league entry at best. Going against him would be borderline suicidal. If Romanski walks, it's pretty much Game Over for the club.

Its easier to blame the manager...partly because they've also adopted the mentality of their owner i.e. they've been conditioned to think managers are as replaceable as kitchen towels. I just hope Guardiola doesn't take the job...to me it would be career suicide.

Oh, I agree - it's all pretty obvious what is going on at Chelsea. Abramovich is essentially untouchable as long as he keeps bleeding money. But if Abramovich brought Benitez in (even if only temporarily) because he thought Rafa would finish the season out better than RDM, the supporters are not helping the plan by tearing the manager a new one.

Mourinho will be available next season, but I doubt he'd go back to Chelsea when he can probably go anywhere he wishes. I just hope it isn't Man Utd.

Udinese 0-1 Liverpool

A good performance from Liverpool, away from home against decent opposition. Despite being a meaningless competition, the Europa League does provide Brendan Rogers with the chance to get more games under his belt and hopefully this will accelerate the process of reshaping the team to his philosophies. We are still pretty weak in the attack, and must rely on possession and stout defending to win games by small margins. Somehow we managed that even with Jamie Carragher on the pitch. ;)

In the aftermath of the incident last Sunday the KNVB has decided to cancel all
32,000 amateur games this weekend.
The Professional games will start with one minutes silence.

I kind of think that cancelling the professional games would have been appropriate too. Really hurt everyone in the pocket. (It seems to be the only language football understands.)

I'm only an occasional football watcher but I'm always surprised by the disrespect shown to the refs. Even the managers are at it. It wouldn't be tolerated in rugby. Bad decision - suck it up - thank the ref and just play better!

Awful that Dutch story, if someone told you it had happened you'd struggle to believe them. Such a tragedy.

Leeds can win four on the trot if they're successful at Pride Park on Saturday. It will be the first time we've done that since December 2009.

Unfortunately, we don't have a particularly great record against Derby. Still, with Thomas (or Hall) providing pace and skill down one flank and the outstanding Sam Byram behind the rapidly improving Paul Green, we look in good shape. I'd take a point but for the first time in an age I'm optimistic we'll get all three. Bring on tomorrow...

I reckon Guardiola will replace Mancini at City when Mourinho takes over at United. I'm sure he'd love to revisit that rivalry, they had some fantastic Classicos.

good. well done.

what is really odd to me, as i understand this story, is the dad was actually refereeing in a game his son was playing in, right?

is that a common practice there?

here we are not allowed to do that. at least in our little footy community we are very strict about that.

You and me both

You and me three. I'd rather have Solskjaer; start with him as number two instead of Phelan, and put him in charge for the League Cup and FA Cup.

olup - Euro 2020 - England playing in Germany and Germany playing in England? Good for the countries with little chance of hosting the whole tournament.

Cheers,
OW

In the youth competition the home side supplies the officials, it's very common. He was the linesman for the game.

There has been a fourth player arrested today.

That would be appropriate. Unfortunately, the greedy people who make money off the game would never let it happen.

Promoting staff "from the boot room" is the ideal way to run a club. Liverpool did it during their most successful years, Barcelona does it now.

But big clubs with lots of money and foreign owners are not going to think this way; much better, in their eyes, to parachute in a specialist "troubleshooter" who will fix things and bring results quickly. Depending on how much money you have to spend, this could be a Harry Redknapp or a Jose Mourinho.

United should promote someone from within the organization. It may not pay short-term dividends though, so I wonder how the Glazers feel about that.

Even weaker this coming Saturday, as Suarez is suspended. Wonder who he'll play upfront

In all seriousness, we ought to consider a strikerless formation; a 4-6-0 or a strikerless 3-4-3 or something similar. It would be foolish to try to slot someone in to replace Suarez since we have no such player.
