I (and many MLS fans) don't have all that much respect for the current incarnation of the Cosmos. It's another big marketing exercise with lots of hot air and no reality to it, at least yet. We still don't even know if the Cosmos will get an MLS franchise. But its already more of a media darling (despite not having even kicked a ball in training, or even putting together a team) than teams like Columbus who are founding members of the league and have won trophies.

Beckham is finally past his Euro sell-by date, at least for the kinds of contender teams he'd want to be a part of. If he wants to keep playing I would think it's going to be in the A-League or Asia.

I agree with this statement. It also seems that Don Garber is feeding into the whole thing on top of it, I think I read somewhere he's lobbying NYC to help build a stadium in Queens for a new team (potentially Cosmo related). Yet he hasn't lobbied any other potential city's to build a stadium, he's caught up in the Cosmo hype as well which I think is in poor taste considering he's the commissioner of the league.

The sad reality is that market size matters much more than tradition anyway. New York is a huge market, and we all know they can easily support a second (or even third or fourth) MLS franchise. The part that bothers me is that they get so heavily promoted by the league, just like LA and (to a lesser extent) Seattle do. It just feels unfair. Columbus is a smaller, unsexy market. So we'll always be passed over.

If the Cosmos can put together a good, sustainable club, then I'm all for it because its good for the league. But they still need to earn respect in the league and on the pitch. Some well-funded teams *cough* Red Bulls *cough* still have yet to do that.

With a heavy heart, I am tipping West Ham to beat Liverpool on Sunday. Was always possible, hammers on good form and all that but after last night's near miss for the Liverpool squad, nearly ending in tragedy with the airplane engine falling off, staying extra night away and only 24 hours to prepare. Don't fancy out chances.

Personally I don't think it will make a huge difference. I'm more worried about West Ham's form than the travel issues. But it is a pain in the neck.

They've very lovely shirts, but that's rather pointless when they don't actually have a proper team to speak of...

I agree on the shirts. :)

It's a funny situation, because the club does have history - but it is the history of a flashy, unsustainable club who's flame burned very brightly for a short while and then burnt out. If the Cosmos are going to join MLS, they need to operate within the very sensible limits that MLS has defined for the game in this country. They have already trotted out Pele and Cantona and put them in name-dropping-but-do-eff-all roles at the club. But they need to assemble a real, competitive squad, get a stadium, and get down to the business of playing football. I won't exactly welcome them to the league, but if they help raise our international profile I'm all for it.

I am eager to see the day when the rest of the world begins to take MLS seriously, because I fervently believe that day will come.

It's not nearly enough to silence the Chelsea fans, but if Benitez does get Torres scoring prolifically then he will be supported by Abramovich. Which, as this situation has demonstrated, is the only person at Chelsea who matters.

You should have seen the abuse Torres got from so called Chelsea fans last week for daring NOT to attend a dinner hosted by Drogba in London, where he presented every member of the Champions league winning squad with a commemorative ring. Very NBA.

In the youth competition the home side supplies the officials, it's very common. He was the linesman for the game.

There has been a fourth player arrested today.

wow.

we try to go by FIFA rules and Regs... so no immediate relatives can ref a game in whihc they have an immediate relative playing or coaching.

and sheffield wednesday absolutely suck...i'm trying to have a stiff upper lip but it gets harder every week...

ADO Den Haag 1 vs PEC Zwolle 1

A good result for PEC.

Sunday

VVV Venlo 3 vs Vitesse 1

Surprise of the competition so far, Vitesse had most of the ball but did very little with it.

PSV 3 vs FC Twente 0

This win puts PSV back on top of the Eredivisie.

Sorry I've been neglecting the forum recently, I'm been working in sheep shagger land which has a marginal internet connection.

A bit of news which might have passed you by.... try and keep up with this.
Rangers were embroiled in a £140m court case with the Inland Revenue over payments made to players in less than scrupulous circumstances (known as EBTs). When the new owner came into Rangers he decided the potential liability was too much for him so decided to stop paying HMRC tax due on everything. So Rangers went into liquidation for a £20m tax bill that had been created in less than a year.

So while the old Rangers Football Club was being liquidated, a very similar sounding The Rangers Football Club (which purchased the history and assets of the former for £2m but none of the liability) started afresh in the 3rd division of the Scottish Football League.

So guess what happened a couple of weeks ago? The former RFC (in liquidation) won the tax case. So none of this needed to happen, and since it's a new company so they can't come straight back up. Doh!

They've been catching my eye every week on MotD, Jelavik looks to be enjoying himself.

Leeds can win four on the trot if they're successful at Pride Park on Saturday. It will be the first time we've done that since December 2009.

Unfortunately, we don't have a particularly great record against Derby. Still, with Thomas (or Hall) providing pace and skill down one flank and the outstanding Sam Byram behind the rapidly improving Paul Green, we look in good shape. I'd take a point but for the first time in an age I'm optimistic we'll get all three. Bring on tomorrow...

Not a particularly great record is an understatement. That's now 8 wins on the trot for Derby v Leeds. Ah well. Onwards and upwards.

Oh the stupidity - enternal laughter.

Some news from the Bundesliga? Bayern bores the Bundesliga on top. This season seems to be predestinated for looking into other countries leagues so far, especially the PL. Oh, and Hertha can't stop winning. :)

Well, here's a little something to cheer up those Rangers fans (or is that 'The Rangers' fans?)

I hope you are not insinuating I found that funny just because he was a Celtic fan? Indeed I'd find that funny regardless of who he supported. :D

While my team is languishing down in the 3rd I'm currently being tempted to go and see a few St Mirren matches (my other local team). St Mirren do a lot in the Renfrewshire community, they come out to my lad's school and run their boys club. On Saturday they took my lads to the St Johnstone game, let them play on the pitch before the game, led the players out. I've only got positive things to say about the club, it's great to see them get involved in such a way and I'll definitely be taking my lads to a few more games.

But big clubs with lots of money and foreign owners are not going to think this way; much better, in their eyes, to parachute in a specialist "troubleshooter" who will fix things and bring results quickly. Depending on how much money you have to spend, this could be a Harry Redknapp or a Jose Mourinho.

...

Is Redknapp 'Faceman'?

If someone at a club/with close ties is capable, go with them. The danger is going that route for the sake of it - a less than able body. Ferguson rates Solskjaer's ability to read the game, and he has a good record with the Reserves and current club Molde FK - not Real Madrid, hence starting as number two.

Where did your lot get three goals?

---

Manchester thing:

Tevez kicks at Jones - but he isn't Barton so he stays on the pitch and avoids MOTD dressing down, Balotelli stamps on Evans, imaginary offside, missed penalty offences and dodgy throw in decisions - both teams. Most of it occured in the half of one linesman; not biased, just poor. Still, turned out nice again.

Cheers,
OW

The difference this year was that Utd had RVP in their jersey whilst City kept Balotelli in theirs. RVP proved the magical difference...again.

Not from any striker's boot, I can assure you. It's the best possible performance from a Suarez-less Liverpool I can imagine, though leaking two goals is a bit disappointing.

It's hard to say we "need" the points, because Liverpool are going nowhere this season, and I doubt Rogers really cares whether Liverpool qualifies for the Europa League or not. But I suppose our goal for the season should be the highest possible league finish. So... we needed the points.

I think the game was pretty close. It's probably a Manchester title again at any rate. Man City is still less disciplined as a unit, and the more and more we talk about United's weaknesses the more it sounds silly because they keep winning anyway. It seems that no amount of bad ownership up top or talent gaps in the squad can stop Fergie. RVP has been remarkably healthy so far as well.
