In other news, Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill recalls winger Ahmed Elmohamady from his loan spell at Hull City. Made 24 appearances scoring 1 goal. Have to say, he's looked a player for the Tigers whenever I have seen him

WHAM!!

Guardiola new coach in Munich...welcome Pep!

All that talk in the English press about him going to the Premier League...heh.

I am eager to see how Guardiola fares at a club other than Barca. Bayern seems to be a club rife with intrigue and personnel problems, so I hope Pep can navigate his way through it to success.

I hope he fails at Champions League level.;)

I dunno, sounds like they are taking advantage of the situation with Lance Armstrong to bail out of a deal with Livestrong, to whom they owe money. Smart PR, but perhaps a little underhanded.

You are absolutely right I should have read the article better, Sorry.

I heard a rumor on the radio, that one of the reasons he didn't like the idea of the UK, was the Tabloid press.

That's great it'll be interesting to see how he does.

Barca it will be a tough act to follow.

When I started reading the article I thought the same as you did - "ah, a great gesture". But then I read further and realized they owed money to Livestrong. People are going to see right through that I think.

I can't blame him for that. The German press seem a little less bloodthirsty.

looks like Hoeneß had to 1-up 1860 with an even bigger name

apart of the language barrier i suspect i have little doubt about his ability to lead them to success, after all the current roster is filled with half the german national squad, rather young with key players having just recently signed new contracts and they always have money if he wants new additions
President Hoeneß, sport director Sammer, and coach Guardiola ... a year ago i would have said "fantasy football" to that

haha! Wonder what happens to Gomez though...maybe Bayern buys Falcao and Neymar too and half the world goes nuts!

What worries me a bit is that my girlfriend just moved from BCN to Munich.

So he (Pep) stayed away from England after all, smart move. If he went to City or especially Chelski it would've been Game Over.

SAF isn't ready to leave, Liverpool already in transition, and Arsenal care more about the bank accounts than football. La Liga is not an option for obvious reasons.

Hence by elimination we have a big club in Bundesliga...a la Bayern Munchen.

He's better off not going to England. He strikes me as an earnest, passionate man whom the English press would tear to shreds. Like a Spanish Kevin Keegan, albeit one who was never punched in a layby...

That'll be a portcullis on that crest, I reckon. I'm more concerned by the apparent Lancastrian leanings on display...

Dismantled by Nike, who cherry picked the key contracts (England, Manchester City) and left many of the others to expire.

They're unveiling stuff for their South American teams at the moment, but long term you fear for them.

Spot on analysis. Gone by 2015

Good luck to Auf Wiedersehen Pep, it'll certainly be interesting to see how he gets on in Germany. To be honest I'm kind of glad he's chosen not to wander down the more obvious Manchester City/Chelsea route.

Umbro supplied our kits during our two Premier League seasons, and the promotion season prior. Unsurprisingly the demand for shirts spiked during this period – the time at which Nike bought them out.

The club placed orders for extra shirts, but Umbro struggled to meet demand. A contact at the club told me that a key reason for this was that following the take over Umbro had to use Nike's manufacture and supply chains – and these gave Nike branded products priority over all but a few Umbro branded lines.

I don't know how things have been on this front over the past couple of years, but if Umbro come the sale were still heavily reliant on Nike's set up to get their products on the shelves they're going to have serious problems beyond the loss of their key accounts.

Now, they have been bought by another US company – Iconix – but there's talk that they're looking to position Umbro more as a leisurewear type brand, rather than one specialising in football gear. Certainly, they're still producing kits for some of their existing contracts but none are being renewed as they expire, nor are new ones being announced. Umbro may not disappear completely as a brand, but it looks like their days as a producer of football apparel may well be numbered.

It's a sad story, Jaffa - I remember wearing Umbro rags during my short career as a left back/goalkeeper. I had the shiny checkered kit.

Nike is not ace.

Man Utd win, setting up a reunion with Berbatov...

Meanwhile, Robbie Keane is set to keep doing his ridiculous goal celebration in LA a little while longer.

I must take issue with that statement. He's only been a manager since 2008.

After retiring as a player, Guardiola became coach of FC Barcelona B. On 8 May 2008, Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced that Guardiola would succeed Frank Rijkaard as the first team manager. He signed his contract on 5 June 2008. In his first season as manager, Barça won the treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League. In doing so, Guardiola became the youngest UEFA Champions League-winning manager ever. The following season, Guardiola and Barcelona won the Supercopa de España, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup, bringing the manager's tally to the maximum of six trophies in six competitions in one year, thus completing six trophies sextuple in two seasons.

All in five years. What else does he have to do more, walk on water.

I do think that he has proven to the world that he does know something about football.

Then I remembered you are a Liverpool supporter, I don't think that you can remember what success is in football.:p

I would have won more trophies during that time as manager of Barcelona. Managers get defined by (1) trophies (2) legacy (3) building and rebuilding teams (4) Added value (i.e. briliant tacticians, excellent transfer record, or motivators) in success.

He's proved himself in one out of four. With a team which contained the best you can ever have. Which benefited from Spain's investment in coaching infrastructure which began in the early 1990s after the failure of the golden generation (Butragueño team) in the late 1980s.

Only the passage of time will tell on the rest of it.

well the German tabloids aren't much better than the English ones, I read that Raul told him a lot of nice things about the Bundesliga, nice filled stadiums and what not. So maybe that also won him over.

It will be interesting to see, how he fares with Bayern's president Hoeneß and manager Sammer, both are driven to be successful and if things don't go the way they are expecting, he's gone, though chances with that roster are slim that they'll go down any time soon.

Only thread I see for real success with Bayern is the lack of his aquainted assistant(s).

And I see his move as a quite pragmatic one and in no way a statement against Barclay's League or English press or because he's a chicken (did I really just wrote that ). After Bayern he will be ready for United or Barca.

That is sad and aggravating.

Umbro has made some of the best kits in the game the last few seasons.

Nike should take note.

so how real are the chances of Sneijder going to 'Pool? of Willian going to Spurs?

or vice versa...?

I think you might be judging Pep a little harshly. It's true, at Barca he had a world-class squad who worked well together and followed his directions. But there have been other squads that look just as good or better on paper and have done very poorly. I think Pep could easily have screwed things up badly - but he didn't.

With that being said, this will be the first time Guardiola comes into a club he has had nothing to do with as a player, with a squad that is big on talent but perhaps less close-knit than Barca, and in a foreign country. So he does have much to prove.

twietee - didn't think I needed to put a :) after chicken.

A couple of years ago I thought, yeah, Pep, but with time the view has moved closer to Confuzzzed's. Would the 'Bald One' stick around any longer than the 'Special One'? Doesn't seem likely - another club for the collection. Re Manchester United, either could be employed to try to control the dip after SAF leaves - meanwhile Solskjaer is readied.

Lord Blackadder - Berbatov - never liked him :D.

Cheers,
OW
