An Island in the Salish Sea
We were driving into the US a few years ago, post Sept 11, at a small crossing in upstate NY. Usual questions from the border guard, length of stay, purpose, were we bringing anything into the States. We answered "Beer" to that last one (a 6-pack of Creemore Springs for my cousin's partner). He immediately cleared us and we were on our way. Didn't ask how much beer, or it was for, etc. Apparently bringing beer into the US meant we were good, 'ole, harmless Canadians. :)

I really hate fulfilling someone else's stereotype! :)

We tend to joke a lot about it and make fun of Canada...

But there are two major viewpoints.

#1: it's a pretty solid country, very similar to the US. They have some "weird things," like socialized healthcare. Probably wouldn't want to live there unless they offered a very good-paying job.

#2, my opinion: A very solid country similar to the US. I admire their healthcare system, but worry about their anti-hate speech laws infringing on free speech. Wouldn't mind living there if a solid job popped up.

Don't forget Mcheal J Fox, Alex Trebeck, Alan Thicke, Rick Morannis, Alannis Morrisette--oh crap were being invaded aren't we? C'mon your Maple syrup moves faster than your invasion force does and it looks like Mr. Fox is starting to get a lil bit shakey. :D

ЧИКАГО!
I've been to Toronto once in the 90's.

It seemed OK.

The people seemed nice enough, Chinatown was interesting, shopping around at yard sales was fun.

The Canadian Customs guys on the plane going there were very strict about just who they would let in their country, and you'd better not be coming up to take work from some Canadians. Also, you had to show proof of ability to return home at your own expense, like a return ticket.
I think that's a good policy.

Canada - Good Shopping! :)

Have Fun,
Keri

I've said it before, but I'll say it again- Canada is awesome!

Cute guys (in good shape, too), good food, friendly people, equal marriage rights and universal health care.

We can learn a lot from our friendly neighbor to the north. :)

With all those islands, the Nunavut Territory looks like diarrhea on the map.

I like Canada and Canadians. I like America a lot better, but I like Canada.

You guys are the best hat ever!

Thanks. You guys make a great pair of underwear! :D

Haha! You should try being a foreigner at the US Customs! Honestly, the US/Canada border is like a 200 yard (meter!) strip of Nazi Germany between the two friendliest neighbo(u)rs on earth.

Interesting. But I can tell you, last time I visited, Canadian customs treated me like a criminal. It was really a bit much. So perhaps it works the same when you guys come here.

Absolutely. There is a great film with an exceptionally good border sequence, Highway 61. My wife is a Permanent Resident in Canada (Green Card equivalent) and she gets fingerprinted and mug shotted every time we cross the border. Things made a turn for the worse after 9/11. Sad really.

They did the same to me too when we drove to Canada last summer. So did customs in London. Maybe it's the fact that my last name, despite being only 6 letters and 2 syllables, and sounds exactly like it's spelled, is unpronounceable by everyone. I should change my name to Smith and see what happens :p

Of course, once I was in Canada (and London too, for that matter), I had a wonderful time. It's just getting in there that can be a bit of a pain.

Funny thing is I been thinking about this thread all day while I was at work--anyone remember the flick where Alan Alda played the president? Operation Canadian Bacon? LOL
