IMO, the first and second Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, linked stories were super, and the best of the DC Bond films. What followed was good, until SPECTRE crashed and burned. :(
I just finished watch Quantum of Solace and that was a really good movie, I enjoyed that immensely. While it was a continuation of Casino Royale, I found it much more cohesive and gripping

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009). This was not the happy Thanksgiving movie we were hoping for. I'm pretty sure this was added to our list because Rachel McAdams was in About Time (2013). Both were interesting takes on the same idea.

Any place but here or there....
Shanghai 13 - the most all around fun kung fu film I own. Whenever I am having a bad day I pop this in - only regret no Chan Wai Man and Chen Kuan Tai does not fight. Otherwise, this is a perfect and seriously entertaining film from start to finish. Makes the men on a mission thing very intense and sometimes comic-book like. Patriotic Chinese rebels protect a government official and his important documents from various traitors in the title group as the official tries to flee to Hong Kong. A breezy 85 minutes that sucks you right in. And each fight is more fun than the last. I admit every few screenings I drool over a different fight. It's that much fun.

King of Fists and Dollars - not the best film David Chiang and Chan Wai Man have done together (and Polly Kwan puts both in their places), but it's fun even if a lot of the fighting is sloppy as hell. CWM is definitely holding back on everyone here. I sure hope Terracotta release more of his films going forward as he's done some fantastic indies.

Something The Lord Made (2004)

A film about the pioneers of heart surgery and lack of credit given to one doctor, featuring Alan Rickman with a… southern accent, I think. I was surprised by how much I liked this film given the fact that it does something I normally hate: quickly show two characters meeting and hitting it off with very little justification for their amicability. I think the leading duo had such good chemistry between them that their friendship, which did legitimately develop beyond their initial meeting, was compelling from the beginning.

I just watched Casino Royale and I was a little underwhelmed. I think the 2+ hours was too long for the story. It was bad, but it wasn't great. I have Quantum Solace queued up on my DVR and I'll catch that later.

I think there were too many rough patches in the movie, from the plot, the action and to a degree the acting. Perhaps if I saw this before Skyfall, I'd have a different opinion but it seems less exciting then Skyfall.

The main thing is that these films got away with the characature that James Bond had become before them. Good solid action and a story I could buy. Many feel that CR is the better of the two, but because they are linked I enjoyed them both equally.

An old favorite tonight.

I like the direction they took with Bond in these films, a little more edgier, gruffer, and his mistakes cost people their lives. Yet, I still stand by my assessment of Casino Royale. I didn't like it, but I will say without that movie, the second wouldn't make any sense. It certainly laid the foundation for Quantum of Solace.

I liked the original Rocky, but I'm not a series fanboy by any stretch of the imagination, but after hearing lots of good buzz around Creed, I decided to give it a chance.

Mistake.

Creed is a long drawn out cheesey mess. The acting is fine, but the direction turns Creed into a tawdry slog. If this had been half an hour shorter and made by a competent director, this might have been a good movie.

I've watched quite a few chase scenes in my time, but QoS (car chase, boat chase, plane chase) were all riveting. The opening sequence sucked me right off in, along with the Bond girls (Olga and Gemma). So many of them are just decoration. Plus Bond actually an emotional attachment to another human being, referencing the character Vespa. :)

Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)- My expectations crashed when I saw Guy Ritchie's name flash by as Director In the beginning credits. Yet to like any movie he's directed starting with Lock, Stock, and Two Smokin Barrels. My expectations were met: suckola.

I had a chance to watch Bridge of Spies and Steve Jobs. Both were fantastic, with excellent direction, writing and acting. Both films, coincidentally, utilize a clever structure, in their own way, to tell their story. I really enjoyed these films a lot.

I didn't care for LSTSB either. But, I absolutely love Guys other film, Snatch (2000). Have you seen that one?

I always saw Guy Ritchie as trying to be the London Quentin Tarantino and never quite getting there. I don't think I've seen a film I've liked either.
Woah, woah, woah - - hold your horses!

Yeah, Man From U.N.C.L.E. sucked and so has everything Guy Ritchie has done since 2000. But his first feature film, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is an outright black comedy masterpiece. It easily earns it's place on my lifetime top 100 list.

Agreed Huntn. I always saw Guy Ritchie as trying to be the London Quentin Tarantino and never quite getting there. I don't think I've seen a film I've liked either. I tried with Sherlock Holmes, liked Jude Watson but not much else.

He destroyed Sherlockat least my preferred interpretation of this character. Speaking of Sherlock, see the Sherlock thread. :)

I have not. I'm hesitant to pay to see it, but if a free opportunity com s along. :)
I have liked Henry Cavill in his previous works Man of Steel, The Tudors, Count of Monte Christo, but I really disliked his droning-on Napoleon Solo. In addition, the humor was so labored and unfunny in U.N.C.L.E., I tend to blame the script and director.
