Okay, I have my Macbook Pro back now after the (free) logic board replacement and am glad to say it sees to works okay , hurrah!

On the downside, I was hoping this was also going to fix a sporadic keyboard problem I've been experiencing on and off for the last 6 months or more, but it stills seems as bad as ever :-(

I can sense another Genius Bar trip being necessary :-(

Still awesome service from Apple. Glad it worked out.

apple care?

Hi. I see this thread isn't too old and I find myself with a similar problem. My MBP will start to turn on, the LED will light up and the disc will spin for maybe a second, then it all just fails. Sounds a lot like what was experienced here. I'm going to set up an appointment with the genius bar to at least diagnose the problem, but I'm scared of the cost. Was your laptop still covered by the apple care warranty when they replaced the logic board for you?

No, I had 3 years Apple Care, but it had expired over 6 months ago, but they repaired it our of warranty for free!

mention the nvidia issue and all should be fine =]

I have the same macbook pro, and the same issue, which apparently is not just 'the Nvidia issue' said the technician at the apple store.
They run a GPT test by booting of an external disk, and then they run the hardware test, that should write a code back to their disk, which is needed to get a free replacement. I too, have a non booting laptop now. It had the distorted/no video, and now it has gotten worse.

Now I'll have to call apple care, cause there was no option at the apple reseller they told me. (Belgium has no apple stores, only resellers at the moment).

I'm really hoping, they're going to do me a similar offer.
because, whatever caused the laptop for not booting anymore, it was most likely the nvidia chip than me!

My nearly 4 year old Macbook Pro died last Friday (started up, but just weird pattern on scree, same pattern appeared when hooker up to external monitor).

Took into the Apple Shop at 1pm, luckily my laptop gave out the right fault code/codes and they diagnosed it as a faulty Nvidia 8600M GT, 3 hours later had a call to say the repair was done:D

One thing is for sure, this must be costing Nvidia a lot of $$$ if my local Apple store is keeping these motherboards in stock ready to fit

called applecare, still nobody's doing something for me.
really starts to annoy me.

there's no applestore in Belgium/the netherlands... so I should go to france, germany or the UK to have any luck with finding a genius thats smart enough to understand, like me, that it's completely ridiculous to have software being the only way to determine that my HARDWARE is broke?

why do they have to be such a pain in the ***
Nvidia acknowledges the problem, apple admits the issue, I have a logic board with a valid serial number, but no, they could save some small bucks to denie some people a replacement...
this is not the service i thought i would get! for such a pricy tool.

sorry, had to get this of my chest, disappointed like i am, now trying to figure out the next step.

unfortunately yeah, if you call apple support they will just tell you that youre warranty is out and you will have to pay.

if you take it in, however, they can diagnose it and fix it with no cost

Thats awesome to hear. Wow.

I have the exact machine as you. Pre-unibody, early '08 MBP. My keyboard and mouse will freeze and the computer needs restarted. I recently replaced the 3 yr old HDD with a new one. It has gotten better since the swap but it's still not working like its supposed to. I have had to shut down twice in about 2 weeks.

I had the Genius bar replace the keyboard recently, but I'm still getting occasional problems with the keyboard and mouse will freezing and having to restart the computer to fix the problem, so I think the problem must lie elsewhere...

Didn't you also replace the RAM recently and that could be am issue as well.

macbook pro nvidia issues

Hiya

I am having the same problem as is hundreds of people with the Nvidia issue and my early 2008 Mac book Pro not booting at all. You all need to familiarise yourselves with The Sale of Goods Act 1979. I went to the genius bar and was told that because they couldnt run the test they cant repair it but under the sale of goods act if you purchased a defective product you have a right to a repair or replacement. As this is an issue Nvidia and Apple are well aware of it wont take much to prove your case and you have 6 yrs to take it to a small claims court. I am going down this route with Apple and will keep you updated as to how I get on. When you purchase anything you are entering into a contract and your argument is with the retailer NOT the manufacturer. You wont be told of your rights under this law so google it and exercise your right. If youve paid for a repair yourself you can claim the money back and maybe compensation. Good Luck.
This is UK law not sure if its same in other countries.

It needs a seriously low-level diagnostic to confirm the Nvidia chip fault - code that will execute when nothing else will! It comes on a USB stick, maybe your local dealer can get one from Apple if they can convice them they have the expertise to use it.

Any certified Apple reseller should do the job.
