Some thoughts on GA, RTM, and GM

I agree that this probably a typo, or maybe they're imposing a sense of urgency (GA vs GM) internally and to their API consumers.

A GA and a GM are very different in my software engineering experience. GA (General Accessibility) could also be considered the street date. This is when the software is made available to the public at large. A GM (Gold Master) is a step towards RTM (Release To Manufacturing), but both of those would normally come before the GA.

All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if iOS 7 is GA on Sept 10th with a device release date after that time.

I am not thaaat hungry having to look at the new uglified icons as early as possible.
Also, I do not have the trust. The honor of running into severe bugs will go to others. Cook is not the person, who is into perfection - and not even with Jobs it was very clever to greedily hover with the finger above the download button.

No one forcing you to update kiddo.

The new features outweigh the dull icons. I won't update my 4S but will happily buy a 5S and learn to live with the new icons. It only took a couple of days to get use to beta.

Everyone who follows Apple news knows this date. So this person could be repeating it.

Not only does everyone (the fans) "know" that this is the date, they believe that Apple is going to announce new phones. But Apple actually hasn't said that yet. Rumors are a interesting thing.

(I'm just making a point. I do believe there will be a press conference that day and there will be announcements. I've already gotten my quote from Gazelle to correspond with 20th).

My thinking as well, they are probably just going off the rumors.

Am I the only one who is worried that Apple is rushing iOS 7?

Don't get me wrong, I love the change and it was one of the things I wished for but it seems like they rushed with the next generation design.

I remember Jobs took something like 3 years of working on OS X before releasing it to the public. I once hear they worked something like a year just on the aqua like scroll bars.

Something tells me there will be no event on September 10th

because Apple were supposed to send out the invites TODAY.

What a disappointment.

the invites go out the week before the event? should be sometime next week its too early unless they having the event on september 3rd instead of the 10th.

based on last years invites should be sent out on september 3rd. apple sent out invites last year on september 4th and that was a tuesday.

Seeing as this is the first mention of iOS 7 being released on the 10th it makes very little sense how they said "as you already know." I'm going to go with the majority on this and say it was a typo. The iPhone announcement is rumored to be set for the 10th and like usual is to see GM builds released there.

It's unclear how Nuance would get this information, but it's unlikely that a company outside of Apple would have detailed information about Apple's iOS release plans.

Apple is one of Nuance's largest customers (Siri, TTS, ASR), so obviously the ties run deep between the two companies. Not to mention, Nuance has several iOS SDKs and are probably actively testing them in preparation for iOS 7.

They had plenty of time to work on the UI of OS X because the technology was what was holding them up. OS X was a brain transplant (everything was new), iOS 7 is a reskin (nothings really changed under the hood, apart from the normal incremental changes). Also the mobile phone industry moves a lot faster, so they can't afford to spend years working on this.

Those days of multi-year development cycles are long gone.

iOS 7 seems more like a re-skin than a full rewrite of the OS.

Just noticed buckyballs up above said essentially the same thing. Ha Ha.

I understand its a re-skin but I felt they came up with it too quickly. I can't recall where, but I read that Jony Ive worked on it for only 6 months or so!
Even that is too quick for a skin. I think Apple kind of felt that it was doing ok until they realized their UI is a bit old and decided to do something about it quickly. The demo that we saw on Apple's event clearly shows that the UI needs much work. It is not Apple like to show half-products. They usually put out the perfect product out.

The Safari icon was terrible. You can't tell if it is a compass or a browser.

I think Apple is feeling the heat of Android... Diminishing marketshare is probably making Apple management re-evaluate the state of iOS.

Or, you know, it was time for Apple to make a larger change in iOS after all the years, unrelated to Android or anything else.

Actually not, because there's a high likelihood that Nuance already has the GM...
But the email was to other developers who use Nuance technology and who aren't necessarily Apple partners and therefore wouldn't have access to a GM until Apple releases it to at least developers.
