Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB for macbook pro 2008 model

I believe that is SATA I. So you should be able to put that drive in you will cap out at 1.5 Gbs. So the drive won't be the bottleneck but the bus will. It shoudl still be a ton faster than an HDD.

I don't have personal experience with that drive, but have been reading a lot about SSDs lately as I am going to put one in my MBP after seeing my wife's new MBA perform.
The Samsung are tops on my list. I am now debating the EVO or the Pro. EVO for size, but Pro for pure specs and lifespan, though the EVO will last longer than my laptop will.

Just going on what I have read lately. The Pro has a longer warranty (5 yr vs 3yr). It uses MLC technology versus TLC. The TLC is slower on some benchmarks. Though, not sure if it would really be perceivable.

The EVO's technology has a smaller number of Max accesses compared to the Pro. However, they both will last longer than the laptop will be around. There was one test on the EVO that showed that the drives they tested lasted 3 times longer than advertised. So can't go wrong with either really.

I am still debating on which to get myself. The pro costs more.
Pro ~$229 for 256GB
~$429 for 512GB

EVO ~$180 for 250GB
~$330 for 500GB.

Technially the MLC NAND in the Pro will last longer than the TLC NAND in the Evo. However anandtech tested the TLC in the Evo and showed that a 500GB drive will last 38 years with 50GB of writes per day. You get more lifespan with a bigger drive and less with a smaller drive (no matter what the nand type) :

As Sandman1969 said the performance within your sata bandwidth should be about the same. If they were the same price and I was buying smaller than 500GB I'd go Pro.
 
here in norway the evo costs almost 100 dollars cheaper than the pro.

Is it worth it to spend 100 dollars more for a SSD for 2008 MBP?

My budget is limited and if i have enough money i want to increase the RAM from the 2 GB to 4/8.

For the older SATA interfaces, I would say the EVO is perfect for you and that would give you the dollars to upgrade the memory as well.

I am still debating on which to get myself. And the more I think I may go with the 500GB EVO to keep the same drive space I have now. I doubt I would notice a difference in real life between the Pro and the EVO for myself.

Is that the fact there are more chips/registers to move memory around as it does day to day work, so there is a bigger pool to move bits to which would reduce the number of typical writes to a particular sector since there are more in the pool?

Also, I looked at this page which I am not sure how accurate it is. But it shows the Pro as 3% faster. And actually the EVO is slightly faster in random read speeds. I think I will splurge an extra $100 for the 500GB EVO drive.

i would do the same, the 500 GB. but since im doing this for my mum that does not need all the gigs im ok with 250. ordered the 250!!

Sure it will be night and day. Mine arrives tomorrow, I did next day shipping from Amazon. Love Amazon prime.

After a flawless install i can confirm that so far everything went fine and the 250 GB evo is a speed of 200-215 against the former 7200rmp of 40-50.
