Not necessarily. The iPad Air is thinner, so it possibly would have still fit in the slot on the Logitech keyboard. Come to think of it, it may still fit nicely with a case attached.

They redesigned these because the Air is smaller in every dimension - the keyboard will overlap the iPad by around an inch now when used as a cover as intended. The stand may work, but I am guessing the thickness difference will make it sit at a different angle.

How in the world did you think the old iPad cover would fit with a newly redesigned iPad?

Sigh, read thread before you post. The new iPad is *thinner*, so it's certainly possible it would fit into the slot of the existing Logitech keyboard case.

Yikes good point. I stand corrected. Anyone want a previous generation Logitech Ultrathin keyboard case? :)

how would the iPad Air be secure in a case that's too big? Obviously something smaller would fit in something larger but that defeats the point of a case if it isn't secure and doesn't move around

iPad (16gb) + keyboard for productivity = ~$600-$700....

I don't know about you guys but I would much rather spend the $400-$500 more and get a fully fledged system, a 13" air...

completely different use cases. most of the time i dont need a physical keyboard making the extreme portability of the ipad and its incredible battery life are the primary value. it's much easier to pass an ipad around. sometimes, i want a physical keyboard. but to always carry a heavier, bulkier laptop with a shorter battery, and having to take it out of my carry-on at security checkpoints, when i dont need its added power, doesnt hold value for me.

different use cases.

I wish Apple would have come out with a keybord cover of their own. I think Microsoft has a small advantage by having one.

what specifically is the value-added advantage?

I hear what you're saying, but $400-500 more is not insignificant.

Certainly, one option is getting a cheap bluetooth keyboard and you're just as productive.

And what will you do when you want to use it as a tablet? Crack your macbook air into two?

Then I'd rather spend the $600-700 more to get a retina MBP to get a more fully fledged system. Oh, let's spend even more to get a fully fully fledged Mac Pro!

I would, but I'm waiting to see what kind of keyboard covers you can get for it.

You mean you think there's a way they could have lost even more money on the Surface?

I don't think you've actually used this product before. In addition to it being a cover/case, it is a keyboard with a slot where you can prop up the iPad while you type. I was just referring to the slot being potentially backwards compatible, I wasn't thinking about the case angle and the fact that it wouldn't fit. Hence my 'I stand corrected' comment. Thanks

The iPad was never supposed to be a Mac replacement (even though we're close now). My new Retina Mini will be used along side my MacBook Pro, not instead of it; similarly to how my current iPad is used. A use case I don't believe to be uncommon.

That's my usage as well. iMac, Air, iPad (soon mini), etc. All different machines, all different uses, surprisingly little overlap. That's good product design and management.

Yes. The MS keyboads are integrated into the Surface design, allowing them to use the power of the tablet (no battery to charge in the KB) and transfer data without using BT. Also, the new MS keyboards are both backlit.

BTW, just in case someone has been confused by the reviews around: keyboards are as optional for Surface as they are for iPad. Surface is 100% functional without external keyboards. The on screen keyboard is great. That said, if you need to type a lot, the MS keyboards are very useful (and quite expensive :-()

Some advantages of having a 1st party keyboard are:

  1. No need to charge the battery in the keyboard (power from the tablet)
  2. No waste of power due to the use of bluetooth.
-No battery and no BT in the keyboard helps to make it thinner, lighter and more reliable.-
  3. The tablet is aware of the position of the keyboard (eg: disables the keys when you fold in to the back).
  4. The OS can take advantage of special characteristics (eg. gestures on the "touch cover")
  5. The whole design tablet+keyboard looks more consistent.

I've tried the iPad air on the old ultrathin keyboard cover and found that although the iPad air won't fit into the slot, the Smart Cover can sit on the part behind the slot perfectly. This will be my temporary set up before I get the new ultrathin keyboard for the iPad air!:D

At least you can get some use out of it, why not just sell it?

Hmm... I think my original ultrathin keyboard has some build quality issues since the magnetic hinge on the cover already fell apart  so I can't sell it.
