I need help diagnosing what part on my iPhone 5 is shot. Starting about a week ago, my touch screen has gotten unbearably sensitive. I'm not talking about the hyper sensitivity that others have experienced (i.e. occasional jumpy screen or response even while hovering over screen)... I've had that too, but could handle it. I'm talking about way over the top, screen-goes-haywire, randomly-stimulates-10-different-points-of-contact kind of stuff. The only way I can stop it is to hit the lock button and then re-open it to resume what I was doing, but even that's only a temporary fix. Sometimes I use it for 20 min before it acts up again, sometimes it just goes haywire right away. Regardless, my phone is now just barely on this side of completely useless.

Some backstory... a few months ago, I dropped my phone. It came out of the slim case I had on it, cracked the screen, and bent the frame (although I didn't notice this until later when I had the screen replaced). Since the frame is slightly bent, the glass doesn't sit flush like it used to, but up until a week ago, it was working perfectly fine. I've tried restoring it, doing a total wipe, hoping it was a software problem, or maybe even my jailbreak. No dice. Even resetting the phone back to factory default, the problem persisted right when the phone restarted.

So logic tells me it's a hardware issue. Can anyone tell me which part would be causing this? I would prefer to fix it rather than buy a new/used 5.

Have you tried a DFU restore?

No. But I'm certainly willing to give it a shot.

Defective screen, or they damaged something on the motherboard fixing it.

Hmmm. Well, if it's a defective screen, that sucks, but it's fixable. If they jimmied the motherboard, then it's fuct and I need a new phone
