Anybody done this? did you find it easy or did you regret it? I cant currently make my mind up. Im really considering getting the 15" but I do love my 17". Im not asking for opinions on what to do. Id just like to know how people have benefited/regretted making the switch.

The 15" is a lot easier to carry around.
I think the 17" is more suited as a permanent desk computer.

The 17 is big but the difference isn't THAT huge. I'd stick with the 17 because you're going to lose money in the switch which is essentially a downgrade. Unless you need to haul it to school or work every day, the 17 would be more suitable for most people as it has the bigger higher res screen.

I've had both 15's and 17"s. Currently have 17". Stick with the 17". The screen is beautiful.

You will only receive opinions, because the choice is a personal thing. :)

I'd say this though: if you're happy with the 17", why do anything different?

Reason I ask is i have a 17" PB. However I am considering getting a 15"MBP and a 23"ACD or just a 17"MBP. I am a design student. I feel the 15 and ACD may be a better option as I can use the ACD for work, and my MBP on its own for all the other things I do. The thing is I prefer using a laptop over a desktop and dont really want to turn a MBP into a desktop and end up having it just hucked up to the ACD all the time. Thats where the 17" comes in... hmmmmm decissions, decissions.

According to this post... (and if you have the budget) I think the 15" MBP and 23" ACD sounds great. That's a very nice setup.

If i were you i'd go with the 15" and the 23" ACD... You may miss the extra seen space on the book... BUT you will more than make up for it with the ACD... and are you gonna really miss that extra when you are on the go?
I think it's a matter of how you use your book.

I do think it would be nice, Im just not wanting to turn it into a desktop and I fear I may.

By the way does apple care cover an ACD aswel? and do they have to be bought together at the exact same time? Because when I purchase my new laptop, if I get the 15" ill have to wait a couple of months before purchasing the ACD due to holidays, gf's birthday etc etc

Yes, if you want the warranty for free on the ACD it must be purchased along with your Mac.

i had a 17" MBP, and i changed to 15". 17 was a bit bulky to carry around. 17" display is really not enough by itself, which means you have to get external if you want to do any graphic work. and if you do that, you might as well get 15 and use external.

with fw800 and dual layer burner, there's nothing 17" has that 15" doesn't.

get 15" and external, you won't regret it.

I have had the 17"pb and then moved to the 17" mpb. I was considering moving to the 15" option because yes you do find more bags to carry it and its "easier" to carry around (but then i would have gone with the macbook).

However I stayed with the 17". I take it with me all the time whereever I go, and i don't find it to be a hassle, I have tried to limit all the wired things I have connect to it when I am at home as well.

The thing with the 15" with the ACD is that you will be physically tied to your desk at home when you use it because of the ACD. Questions to ask yourself:

do you move around home alot or you are going to be tied to that one desk where the ACD is?

do you mind NOT having a bigger screen when you do go out (let say at a coffee shop or work or school) with your 15" and work on design work? Because I do find having a bigger screen for design work helps alot.

It's all a matter of preference.
