The Filter - iTunes playlist generator

MusicIP Mixer - another playlist generator

How exactly do these work? I read some of the Filter website and didn't really understand. Are they relying on some database that they have on a server somewhere to generate associations between songs, or are they using your tagging somehow? Does it do anything like beat or otherwise flow matching so that the songs transition well? I'm kind of intrigued.

From the site:

At the heart of The Filter is a music recommendation engine that is continually learning the listening tastes and choices of tens of thousands of music lovers. This huge collection of information is combined with your own likes and dislikes to create a personal understanding of what songs from your collection you will like to listen to and when.

The Filter learns, but also forgets. This means that as your music tastes change, and collection grows, The Filter will evolve with you to keep providing engaging and relevant music for all occasions and moods.

Music IP works a similar way.
