Now how difficult do you think would be for some old lady to hide her bound feet, when it's not even really possible for her to be out and about in public (physically, due to her bound feet, it's quite difficult to walk around), without the law enforcement people bothering them?

those old ladies with bound feet are surprisingly spry. after years and years, they're just used to it and carry on with everyday business.

Foot Binding was extremely common in China up until the 1920's and only when the Maoists took power in 1949 did it really start to die out.In spite of all the horrendous things they did women gained hugely post '49,those gains are now under attack again with this latest version of state capitalism.

PS It's origin was in the class system where bound feet indicated a women who didn't need to work, somewhat similar to the western idea that a pale skin indicated a women who had no need to work in the fields,of course now a sun tan is a vague indication of someone who can afford foreign holidays.

foot-binding was also considered to be very attractive. don't ask me why.

:(

it's 70F right now at 2 in the morning, and I'm eating ice cream.

Oh hey, I was eating ice cream just now.

It's 4AM, and 80F, and I have air conditioner on. This is in St. Louis.

sigh. it's a cool 68 out. tomorrow's high is supposed to be 95, and i wish i was eating ice cream. :(

I think the idea is small feet are attractive, binding is just a way of ensuring the feet doesn't grow big.

But in my opinion, a normal feet is MUCH better than a dysfunctional and deformed one. And it's not even like Chinese women have big feet anyway.

It's 69 here right now, and I'm enjoying it since tomorrow will be 97.

I hate Arizona. I spend so much money on ice cream from April-August. I remember in elementary school they would sell Otter Pops during recess for 25 cents. Those were the days. Popsicles and (good) ice cream are expensive.

I don't know how we got from foot binding to weather so quickly.

I've seen some x-rays of a foot that was bound. It was SO messed up. I'll try to see if I can find them.

i wear size 9-10 shoes. wide too, if possible.
impossible to find. but anything smaller/narrower hurts my feet, particularly my toes (dammit, claw toes).
stop making stereotypical comments!
then again i'm not chinese, but when you originally stated it, it was applicable. >:p

It'll be 90+ tomorrow :(

On the flip side, I got a new ice cream maker yesterday after my mom broke the old one. I made a quart and a half of strawberry peach tea ice cream with it that got instantly devoured by me, my mom and my neighbors in a matter of like a couple of hours.

So I'm in heaven :D

She might well be from before when it was outlawed.

And these practices cannot be completely outlawed. As in the law enforcement in China is not nearly strong enough to enforcing every law. Not even close.

No country is strong enough to enforce every law. Some laws really are not meant to be followed; in particular, the laws that citizens don't see value in.

This foot-binding law was probably very difficult to enforce....unless the police are constantly looking down at feet rather than what's going on around them.

Hey, stop getting off topic!! We're talking about feet here! Mmmm.....feet. Unfortunately, when I searched for "women bound by the feet", this is what I got. :(

(actually, I got it from an email. Don't worry. I'm not sick.)

It's not stereotypical comment!

Let me prove it to you.

Assuming on average, people's bodily sizes have the same proportion. Taller people would have longer arm, bigger feet.

On average Asian women are smaller than white women and black women.

Therefore on average Asian women would have smaller feet than the rest of population.

But of course, i'm saying on average, not every single case.

It's not stereotypical comment!
Asian women are not insanely short tiny skinny small footed people anymore. Maybe like 200 years ago it was the case, but it's a horribly outdated stereotype now as newer generation Asians grow increasingly taller due to changes in nutrition.

We go from 4 feet tall to over 6. Our shoe sizes can go from 3 to a mens 14. We don't all wear size 0 clothing, some wear sizes as big as 20 or even larger. Some of us have A cup boobs, while others have natural D+.

Saying that on average Asian women are shorter and smaller than other women now is like saying that race has a correlation with intelligence. Maybe a long time ago someone had the crackpot idea that it did, but no, there was no such correlation. Every difference could be explained by social differences, not by race.

I don't disagree with the comment that height has a correlation with foot size, but otherwise...

 My feet are pretty big for my height and build.

And you complain about the quality of MY threads?
Um. Foot binding can have a lot of depth to the topic-- it's about societal norms, socio-economic issues, gender roles, and more that I'm probably leaving out. I'm sorry, which thread of yours are you referring to that has such depth of discussion?

are demis normally this annoying? derailing thread subjects with self-righteous platitudes.
I don't speak for all demi's but a few of them I know agree:
We try- 'specially with the annoying ones that have popped up of late from certain posters. And I'm not talking about Macdrive's.

I think the idea is small feet are attractive, binding is just a way of ensuring the feet doesn't grow big.

I read a novel 'The Binding Chair' where the main female character has her feet bound by her grandmother. She describes the pain... and the worse pain post-Communism when they tried to make her walk with unbound feet.

The book suggests that men also found it erotic because the position of the arch/toes meant that the woman could give a handjob with her foot

Aside from the erotic side of tiny feet, there is a very practical side to it as well: the woman literally cannot run away from her husband and his family, since she would: 1) not be able to get very far 2) get a regular job that an unbound woman could due to limited ability 3) could not change her identity. Foot binding was not done very often, reserved for upper classes who could afford to have a wife that was essentially disabled, or for middle class who wanted to marry their ( usually only child) daughter higher up so she could provide them with financial security in their old age.

This woman's husband ( if she has one) would be considered very lucky to have such a high status wife, and he himself must be high status to support her. Kind of the modern day equivalent of marrying a blue eyed blond bombshell who requires her weekly manicures and facials, and yearly surgeries.
looks good, costs alot and therefore implies you are a man of wealth and status.
