Recently we've seen so many iPhone stories that even the token "Other than the iPhone" post has already been shunted well down the page.

At the top of the MR site we've got the Mac Rumors, Page 2, (Page 3), Buyer's Guide, Shop, Guides and Forums tabs.I think it would help if there was a division between Apple consumer electronics news and Mac news in the form of a new tab along the top. This new tab could be the home to all the iPhone and iPod etc. news.

But doesn't the iPhone deserve to be on the front page when it's going to be the device of the century? Yes, I suppose so, how about the form of a headline post with a link to the full story on the iPhone tab?

This was just a moment of inspiration, I'm interested to hear what everyone else thinks.

Of course iPhone stories are clogging up the front page, it's the story of the moment, which is kind of the point of the front page - to show top stories ;)

No need for an iPhone tab. When iPhone is no longer the item of the moment other things will take over.

New iMacs next Tuesday! :p

I suppose my moment of inspiration was part/mostly due to the fact that the only iPhone news I'm interested in at the moment is which, if any, mobile carrier in the UK is going to make a deal with Apple for the iPhone. I personally am hoping it to be Vodafone since I'd like to switch to them in the near future since O2 are currently screwing me over and have particularly pooor customer service.

EDIT : This shows how prevalent/annoying iPhone news has been recently...

Nice use of Safari 3 Find feature!

However, I vote no, this is iPhone Week afterall, expect the rumors to be about iPhone.

I can understand how those not located in the United States would get especially perturbed at the amount of iPhone related knowledge. I can even understand how those in the U.S. would think it is too much.

But, like edesignuk said, this is a problem that will take care of itself in a short time. I don't feel that there is the need to create a separate tab on the top for iPhone specific news.

I do realise that this is iPhone week and also realise that this implies very little mac news whilst apple want lots of hype RE iPhone. But I also think that it might be constructive to see a separation of iPhone, iPod and iNav (all the CE stuff) on a different page.

How bout a while new web site just for the iPhone so I don't have to see anything on MR. Call it iPhonerumors.

There is no reason for it, the iPhone is being released this Friday after that iPhone news will slow down a lot, if it bothers you that much then just take off until sometime next week from here, and by then all of the first people who get it will have said all there is to know about it and if you stay away from the iPhone forums there won't be a lot about it for a while.

That means that someone bought the domain from go daddy but it is on hold.

They're stupid, because if their site was to be about iPhone rumors (which ummm we imply?), then this week was THE week they needed to be functional!

iPhone? What is an iPhone? I have never heard of this thing I don't see why there would be a tab devoted to a product no one has heard anything about...

[/sarcasm]

Seriously though, as mentioned before it is iPhone week. Of course there is going to be an influx of threads on redundant topics. Similar things happen around WWDC and MWSF and there is no tab created for that.

Thing is though, I don't think that the iPhone "news" is going to subside in the near future. Were there no rumours about computers after the Macintosh was released?

But unfortunately not from the front page...

WWDC and MWSF are events, not products. Apples and Oranges.

I wish MacRumors would stick to rumors about Macs and not all of this iPhone crap. The iPhone isn't a freaking Mac.

Besides, they are mac-related. The iPhone is not. It's a phone by Apple running some kind of blackbox OS. From a user's as well as a developer's perspective, this thing has nothing to do with a Mac.

A Macintosh is a computer which runs a version of Mac OS. The iPhone runs Mac OS, and is hence (from a technical point of view), a Macintosh, just VERY very small...

Don't get your hopes up that the iPhone stories will disappear from the front page however, this is something different :)

maybe a preferences 'window' like on spy.macrumors.com, where users can set preferences (in a cookie or summat) to filter certain story types...

or is that already in teh pipeline for the redesign? ;)

At least it's a step in the right direction :)
I wonder if the domain thatdamnphone.com is available?

That means that someone bought the domain from go daddy but it is on hold.

Actually, no it doesn't. It means that somebody bought the domain and paid extra to have it registered privately. DomainsByProxy is another one of GoDaddy's conglomerate of companies, who handle their private registrations.

So I clicked over to the iPhone tab and while I don't care about the topic I do like the layout, is it possible that the front page might get a redesign kinda like the iPhone page?
