[uk] anyone bought in US and contected to O2 on new tariff ?

The sim card that comes with the UK iPhone is a unique sim for the iphone. An ordinary O2 sim doesn't work unless the phone has been unlocked.

so you saying that the phone is not just operator locked, its also SIM locked ?
that would be annoying.

anyone tried another O2 SIM card in their UK phone ?
i will try sometime

I thought the iphone are all completely the same, and only becomes locked on activation.
one of the reasons apple picked 4 band GSM and not EV.DO or UMTS was so they could make no modificatons to the phone internationally, with itunes doing all that is needed on activation. this significantly reduces/eliminates the cost of regional and operator specific production runs.

I'm currently sitting here tip-tapping on the iPhone I bought in New York a few days ago, took home to the UK, unlocked and put my old o2 sim in to! No problems here!

It's terribly easy to do and you shouldn't have any problems.

The only things I'm stumbling at are :

accessing the file system to upload NES ROMs
changing the number format from USA to UK

If anyone can help with those, please let me know!

thats great feedback, thx
I suppose you are using your old O2 tariff and not a new iphone tariff.

I was thinking of buying in NY but then legitimately connecting to O2 in the UK on the iphone tariff

no. the phone is $399+tax in NY which is around £206 on my credit card rather then £270 in London
Sorry, I wasn't suggesting that you wouldn't save money on the hardware, just that O2 might regard it in breach of their terms to use an O2 contract on hardware specifically produced for the U.S. market.

Good luck with it. :)

Give O2 a phone and see what they say. I can imagine their answer, but I think its the only way you'll know for 100%.

Question: do all features work? Do you have visual voicemail?
N.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say it will work.As long as there's an O2 sim in any iPhone you'll be given an opportunity to transfer the contract on that O2 sim to an iPhone tariff as long as you you're eligible to switch tariff (any contract signed before Sept 18th)

Look here for my recent experience

I'm thinking of getting an American iPhone myself, and was wondering whether you ever got the number format changed to UK? I think this might annoy me if I couldn't sort it.
