Apple fans wishing for a Mac desktop that was at least comparable in spec to the iMacs, but without a built in display have finally had their prayers answered!

Today, Apple introduced a new, fully configurable quad-core tower, with 4 hard drive bays supporting up to 4TB of space, and RAM expansion up to a whopping 32GB.

It ships today from $2,299 - the same price point as the high-end 24" iMac - and offers a base configuration of 2.8GHz Quad-Core Xeon processors, with 2GB of RAM and ATi Radeon 2600 XT capable of running 2 dual-link 30" Apple Cinema Displays.

You can read more about it here: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&node=home/desktop/imac

🙂

Not seeing where you are getting the 2,229 price when the base price is 2,799 😕?

The price of 2,299 is an even more stripped down version of the base model. If you click to configure it, you can cut off $500 from knocking it down to only 1 quad-core processor.

Nice! 🙂

This also reinforces the argument that there will not be a mini Tower.

Gotcha, pretty misleading when it says that 8 cores is the standard.
But 8 Cores is the standard minimum configuration.

You have to BTO to drop it down. So in this case it makes sense -- at least to me.

Um.. ya... Mac Pro has been out for a while and it's bottom model has always been more powerful than the top end iMac. So their prayers have been answered for a long time.... Not to mention that Mac Pro has always been without a display so it's not a new idea.

Because real Mac Pros have 8 cores. Anything less is just embarrassing, really.

What don't you people understand? IT STILL IS THE REAL MAC PRO. The 4-core model is still extremely powerful. It's more powerful than the top-of-the-line iMac.

Lol. Scandalous 😉

Yeah... Mac Pros have been out for a while. Not at that price and spec though.

The former Quad core model was $2499 with standard 2x512 RAM and 2.66GHz Woodcrest, while the new Quad core is $2299 with standard 2x1GB and 2.8 Harpertowns and whatever else.

the previous generation of mac pro also had a "downgrade" option that was priced the same I believe. So if this is the "headless imac" then the 2.0 Ghz mac pro was also. It was a full quad core and everything. Really. Honest.

Yeah, it makes sense after the fact...but if 8 is standard that makes 4 substandard. So Apple's now making a substandard MP - who's gonna buy anything substandard.😉

Indeed. $2199. This one's a much better buy though, at only $100 more.

It's not "standard", it's "suggested" 😉
