hey guys..

I've been thinking about the 3 - 5 week wait that i have to grit my teeth through until i get my new mac pro. I was originally thinking that Apple haven't been provided any 8800GT's but it might be something else.

Leopard as it is now, 10.5.1 probably doesn't have the finalised drivers for the 8800GT. Apple might have enough 8800GT's but is waiting until 10.5.2 is final and pressed. We might find that our god, Steve, will announce that 10.5.2 is available sooner than expected and our 3-5 week wait is a "safe" over throw target. That's what i'm hoping for anyway.

Thoughts?

I hope Apple is under promising and will over deliver... if that makes sense.

I am in the same boat, currently my order isn't scheduled to ship until Feb 14th. Even worse, my 30" ACD already arrived... so I typing on my iMac, staring at a beautiful monitor in a box... and I will be for another month.

I know, I know... life is rough

Not to rain on the parade but that is OS X_86 Darwin not official Apple EFI. As in PC BIOS ROMed cards that wont work in a real mac running licensed OS X
I believe you already know about these two threads.

8800GT - Response from Steve Jobs (You posted here.)

Upgrading old Mac Pro to 8800 GT graphics?

so by what you're saying - there's kext's in 10.5.2 which make the 8800 series cards work but they aren't currently in 10.5.0/10.5.1

Apple don't release kext or driver updates as far as i know. They only have ever released in 10.4.x updates.
I'd ask the users with the current Mac Pros who got the HD 2600XT to see if 8 Series kexts are included that are different them the 8600M GT ones in their special build of 10.5.1.

It looks like 10.5.2 kexts work in 10.5.1.

I hear you. I didn't order the 8800, my MP is coming in a few days, but I already got my ACD and I don't want to open it in case new displays are announced tomorrow and I want to return mine. Doubt that will happen, though.

Does Apple charge the credit card when you order or when they ship it?

Sorry if question has been asked...

They don't charge your card until the order is shipped, but they do put a hold on the card for the amount of the purchase. This will affect your credit limit on the card. This happened to me. I ordered a single quad 2.8, then cancelled the order and immediately re-ordered a dual quad 2.8. When I tried to charge the second purchase my card was declined, as the hold was still on and the new purchase plus the hold put my card over its limit. When I phoned Apple they said the hold would be released in 4-5 working days. I wasn't pleased. I re-ordered using another credit card.

Still just staring at a blank screen...

I had to let it out of the box tonight, just to stretch its feet a bit :p

The 24" iMac has "Monitor Envy"

Nice. :D I'm waiting until mid- to end- of next week to buy my 30" ACD. I'm thinking of leaving it all packaged up just in case Apple releases new displays before my computer ships on Singles' Awareness Day (Valentine's Day) ... but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep my hands off it.

Having done a bit of research I think we can safely assume that the delay is caused by 10.5.2. The current NVDANV50Hal.kext (10.5.1) does not contain the device ID for the Geforce 8800GT.

Poking around inside the 10.5.2 .kext reveals that it has the device ID of the Geforce 8800GT and also the Geforce 8800GTS 512MB ;)

New kext 10.5.2
Device IDs:
0x00f0 (?)
0x0190 (?)
0x0400 (Geforce 8600 GTS)
0x0420 (G86-400)
0x06e0 (G92)
0x0600 (Geforce 8800 GTS G92)

Old kext 10.5.1
Device IDs:
0x00f0
0x0190
0x0400 (Geforce 8600 GTS)

The final version of 10.5.2 should include Device ID 0x0611 which is Geforce 8800GT.

this is looking good...

Less than a week after the last release (9C16), Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.5.2 to developers today. The latest seed (9C20) lists no known issues. They've also separated the graphics drivers out into a separate update called Leopard Graphics Update, which must be installed after Mac OS X 10.5.2.

hopefully that 3-5 week wait will be chopped back

I've been telling everyone... it's likely to come out next week!! (read my sig for specific details on the 'how'). I've had it posted for some time now.

I guess we are all holding our breath then but I am so far fine with this Radeon HD 2600 XT ... that is until I am finished installing Final Cut Studio 2 on this thing and Motion runs like crap ;)

But this is hard evidence and not just speculation.

hah

I feel your pain, I ordered my mac pro & 20 inch monitor Jan 17th & received the monitor jan 19th. The date my mac pro is shipped at feb 25th and arrive here feb 29th. I added the 8800gt and they gave me some bs answer oh its limited and something else but I forgot, oh that the estimate shipping might be sooner then stated usually. Whatever I wish they stop playing games and just send the damn thing. Really pisses me off that I have to wait a whole 40days not using my monitor, makes no sense.:mad:

It always seems like they have delay/supply issues with high-end graphics cards. NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT are all examples of Apple graphics cards that are very limited on the Mac side but are available on the PC side. This makes me think that it isn't a lack of graphics chips issue maybe a rom or driver issue. Who knows?

But I also heard it was software issue. With 10.5.2 coming out then all the systems will ship so I am guessing Feb 13th it will be released or sooner I hope.

So wait, there's the 8800GTS G92 listed there? But how's that possible, it wasn't on the options sheet, nor of any mention of a mac version of it? If they have that, I would love to have one since its closer to the GTX model that the GT (even though I'm still waiting for my BTO Mac Pro with the 8800GT)
