I am using a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.5.2 and have a Canon MX 850 printer. The Canon IJ installer goes through all the steps except it hangs when there is about a minute to go.
The same happens to all Canon IJ printer drivers.
I am currently using a Canon Pixma IP8500 with a BJ driver but the IJ driver refuses to install.
Any ideas please.

Conflict issue?

Sorry I don't have a definitive fix. But just to say that I've recently installed the MX850 on both a MacBook Pro and Mac pro (accessed via network) and have had no problems at all. Perhaps there's an issue/conflict with your already installed printers? Try removing all printer drivers and start again (and faithfully follow the setup instructions). Macs also have the former Unix utility, CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) installed and printers can be managed in this way. For access to this, type the numbers 127.0.0.1:631 into your browser.
