Graphics trouble and kernel panics (and other such fun)

I have a 2.2GHZ Macbook Pro with the 8600M GT graphics chipset, OS X 10.5.6.

Three problems:

1. Random shutdowns, normally after waking from sleep. No crash logs.
2. Random screen freezes. Needs to be rebooted. No crash logs again.
3. Sudden graphics distortion and flickering. Last for about 20 seconds, then kernel panics. The crash logs are short, and short IOKit and NVIDIA drivers to be the problem.

These problems don't happen all the time, but they seem to be happening more often recently. Could they be the symptoms of the faulty GPU?

Sounds like a faulty 8600, which is a known issue. Bring it to the Apple Store and they should be able to fix it up.
 
Actually that sounds like a faulty stick of RAM, waking from sleep issues wont be graphics card related, If you have Applecare or are still under warranty, take it to an Apple store and they will put a new stick of RAM in for you and everything should be fine.

It's not the RAM - I've tried putting new memory in, and I've run all kinds of different test utilities on it. Thanks though.

Have you guys found that your computer will not freeze when it is plugged in? I'm having the same issues with my Early 08 MBP, but it will not freeze if it is plugged in. Is it a power to the GPU issue?
 
Yup, run it by the Apple Store; and it's probably best to get an appointment via AppleCare. Though I've shown up at the Apple Store unannounced and they had me on the wait list for about thirty-minutes max.

Kernel panics are brutal; they'll probably do a diagnostics test on the spot. But the difficulty with kernel panics is that they are difficult to locate the source even by looking at the activity logs or diagnostics tests. I've visited the Apple Store Techs on several occasions and they couldn't tell if it was software or hardware related. So far, it's been software related b/c none of my hardware has been replaced or worked on, and usually I'm finished and out the door within the hour. On the phone with AppleCare I can spend 2-3 hours on the phone, going through a PRAM reset, disc diagnosis, disk permissions repair and disk repair.

And Yes, when it freezes, I've "always" had it plugged in, so definitely NOT a power issue for me...
