Serious question: when did people get so paranoid? 15 years ago, would people have cared if an unmarked car was driving around? Heck, I certainly wouldn't worry about it. So whats with the fear/paranoia?

It is an unmarked police car. I think that gives people the incentive to be a little worried.

I'm with the other poster, if they're in uniform and friendly with campus cops, I'd say its a 90% chance they're police, just walk up (making yourself clearly visible) and tell them you've noticed them around a lot, and inquire about the lack of plates. Police are people too you know, as long as your respectul you CAN talk to them without fear. Maybe watch a Chris Rock PSA if your unaware of what I mean ;)

It must be a cop. Nobody else would drive a Crown Vic. That, or it's taxi.

I drive a Crown Vic. That car's a classic.

I wonder if that's why cops don't bother me, though...

The police in the city my college is in have been having really major issues with corruption, the commissioner's wife was implicated in a major drug ring, officers have been accused of assaulting citizens, a number were fired last spring...there was even talk of calling in the national guard to impose martial law until they could get the police under control. I've seen cops here be incredibly aggressive, seriously toeing the brutality line while arresting people.

Last spring there were some police on campus who had come to help campus safety deal with a frat party that had gotten a little out of hand. Everything had quieted down, the police were getting ready to leave when a few kids came out of a building being a little rowdy. The cops jumped in their cars, peeled out, chased them down the sidewalk and across quads in their Tahoes. When they got to a lifting barrier they didn't have a key for one of the officers jumped out of his truck, started yelling and screaming, yanked open his telescoping baton and started banging it on the barrier, threatening the students who ran away across the quad.

All that and it's just weird to see a car with no license plates or identifying marks driving around. They could pretty much do anything and if

All cars need and must have plates, partly because if they're ever involved in an accident, then the vehicle needs an identifier. Bt like most posts here have stated.... Driving around a car with no plates screams alarm bells. Particularly if you imaging the way police cub crawl (not the derogatory term) in there cruisers.

Check with the local station, sounds like car could be trouble looking for a haunt.

I think people would have been just as concerned 15 years ago with a car being driven around with no identifying plates - it's not like cars were not involved in accidents or used in crime then.

If you witnessed/were involved in an accident involving this unmarked car and this car just drove off without stopping, do you think the police investigating would find it more helpful in tracking it down if you told them it was a nondescript white car or you told them it was a nondescript white car with unique registration number...

Here in the UK you cannot insure a car unless it has a valid MOT certificate and part of the MOT test is that the car has conforming number plates - so any car with no number plates probably will not have a valid MOT certificate so the driver is likely to be driving without insurance too which is more than enough reason to be worried.
