The graphics. They clearly didn't want to use a discrete option, and they didn't want to use Intel's integrated, so they had to keep the C2D in order to continue using nVidia's integrated graphics.

im not so sure if im a fan. the one thing i liked about apple was they normally use the newest processors available to them. using an old technology just doesn't seem right. i can understand the reasons why they have, and yes it may be better to keep with the core 2 duo, but im just not sure if im a fan.

A real shame that the new 13" doesn't sport the i5.

But hey, there's enough new and improved stuff in there to make me splash out instantly - and to make me happy that I waited. 4 gigs of memory as standard (yes!). 250 gb hd as standard (yes!). Better graphics. Even better battery. And a processor that's a bit faster. I'm game.

Finally. It actually happened.

It's not surprising that the GeForce 320M is a custom solution for Apple. The 13" Macbook Pro and Macbooks are now backed into a 2 chip (processor + platform controller/IGP) PCB. There's no room for another chip or for mounting VRAM.

This means Core 2 Duo is making another round on the 13" models but to be honest you're better off than you would be with a Core i3. I just wonder what Apple will do when all Core 2 processors are EOL. It's just a stopgap solution on the 13" models.

Excellent points, by reading your other posts I thought you d be blindly against this, but you present a very good argument instead. Kudos.

I'd like to think that I'm a very objective person.

But the fact of the matter is, Apple sticking with the Core 2 Duo is indefensible. It's your money, please waste it as how you like, but not upgrading the processor for the 13" is a slap in the face. It'll probably sell like hotcakes and i don't think anybody cares about the extra power, but it's still a slap in the face. an upgraded graphics card, more RAM? That's just part of technology, they're merely "moving with it" instead of offering you something more. I think Apple fanboys are truly blind and I have never felt so bad for a group of fanboys in my life.

Oh also, It's sad that there's no resolution bump, but I realize that is probably very very farfetchd so that's fine. this is why anybody who gives a **** about computers don't buy mac. not because of how expensive it is. i'd spend the money if i felt like apple cared enough to not slap me around whenever there's a refresh.

that said, 15" seems to be the good buy. My only guess is that the i3 is backordered so maybe if we wait a couple of months, it'd be upgraded.

I feel bad for you.

why an i5 on top of the line MBPro and not an i&?

i really do not know.
and a lower processor speed?

While I would like to see Core i5 across the entire Macbook Pro line, the 13" Macbook Pro is sadly backed into a corner based on Apple's design choices. nVidia can't provide chipset solutions for Arrandale/Clarksfield. Core 2 Duo is then the only option.

It is still a Core 2 Duo but you're on a much better platform overall given the utility of the GeForce 320M and the underwhelming Core i3.

It'll be interesting to see what Apple will do in the next update.

Really? A slap in the face? A little dramatic.. yeah?

i too find the inertial scrolling an odd thing to promote with the hardware...
other than that, looks like a good set of upgrades.

Hooray...

...for the updates.

Finally a decent processor and, yipeeeee, anti-glare option. :D:D:D

May be indefensible, but I'll try ...

I'm sure Apple built dozens of prototypes with various configurations, and ran numerous benchmarks. In the end, the C2D+nvidea beat out the i5+intel, so they went with it. It was a trade off between upgrading the processor or not downgrading the graphics.

Also, don't forget that to most users a 20% increase in battery life is probably equally or more important than a 20% increase in speed.

I'm along the lines of this sentiment. Though not as agreesive, no offence.

The lack of the i3 is a slap in the face. It is the reason I was holding back for so long. Though being in a house that isn't technical, I've always had to put up with pathetic processors and computers that crash on me when I want to take it to its maximum.

However, considering the extra RAM and a Core Duo etc will be a giant leap compared to the Celeron processors I have to put up with. 1.6 GHz...

Then again, I am still a student and £999 is a lot.

I am content with the other updates, though I had my heart set on the 13"...

Kinda like a blind date where the girl isn't as hot as your were hoping... :p
But her bigger friends turn up who have a bit more

If it's going to "sell like hotcakes" because "nobody cares about the extra power," how is it "an indefensible slap in the face?"

Isn't giving people what they actually want a good thing, and the exact opposite of a slap in the face?

I've got a Santa Rosa 2007 MBP 17" so I've been waiting for something to really make me want to upgrade. I think the i7 17" answers that one for me. :)

I wonder if this makes a refurbed 13" a good netbook alternative.

Or, I could upgrade my 15" Santa Rosa to one of the new 15" i5's with the high-resolution, anti-glare screen...

This update SUCKS! Once again Apple, you've failed us all. You think we want to buy something that's behind in hardware and ahead in price? No way. You should give us 1TB Hard Drive, 6Gb Ram, 10 Hour Battery, Quad Core i7, 1080p resolution, Bluray, USB3 and EVERYTHING ELSE OTHER COMPANIES OFFER FOR LESS. Screw Apple. Thats it. I'm buying a Dell.

Parody is fun.

For those of you, like me, totally aggravated at the lack of matte antiglare screens for the 13" MacBook Pro (and the iMac), we need to bolster the focused protest at http://macmatte.wordpress.com - close to 1,000 petitions there already.

Mini-DP audio?

So does anyone know if these updated pros support audio through mini-displayport? It sucks to have two wires and I'd like to use just one for A/V.

Overall, I am disappointed with C2D in the 13" and no blu-ray support. I guess new Apple strategy is to push consumers away from laptops and focus on iphone/ipad.
