Edit- I guess I should have clarified, this survey is for people who didn't put a screen protector on their phone. I thought it was obvious, but maybe not.
---

I've seen some people say the coating lasts a year or two on average, but wanted to collect some more data points.

If you experienced the oleophobic coating wearing off any iPhone screen, please share:
1. iPhone model(s)
2. How much decrease in effectiveness (description or estimate percentage) after how much time
3. Light/moderate/heavy usage
4. Rare/moderate/frequent cleaning screen
5. Material(s) used for cleaning (hand, shirt/pants, microfiber, water, alcohol, combination, etc)
6. Any other relevant details

The data might be useful to draw new conclusions or reinforce old ones, or might not, we'll see. Thanks

Since I apply a high quality screen protector to my iPhone as soon as I purchase it, I’ve never suffered anything like that.

What did you expect, any fabric or cleaning cloth is abrasive, putting it inside your pocket numerous times a day will do damage to the oleophobic layer.

Especially wet alcohol wipes for glasses and such, will destroy the layer, and anti reflective coatings.

So often times when I get a new iPhone I immediately put on a case + tempered glass screen protector, BUT there were times where I broke the protector on both the Xs Max and 11 Pro Max, and would use them without it and oleophobic coating would still be good.

I used my 11 Pro Max for about 2 years with and without screen protector at times and it seemed to last a long time.

I have chosen to not put a screen protector on my 17 Pro Max so will see how long the coating lasts, if it wears off I will the throw on a protector.

Can you guide what do you use. I am using JETech on 17 Pro Max and oleophobic wore off within a couple of weeks, and now the screen has scratches even though I put it in pocket alone and with nothing else. Its a fingerprint magnet and its only been 1.5 months. Sick of cleaning the screen again and again and the scratches are so visible with dark wallpaper

I use the Spigen EZ fit screen protectors available from Amazon. They’re the best and most affordable I’ve ever used.

I'm still using a near launch day iPhone 11 Pro Max. Never used a screen protector and I work with my hands. It still looks brand new.

Personally I'm impressed, I didn't care if I got some micro scratches or anything but I'm staring at it with the flash light and I don't see anything.

I never have used a screen protector. Never noticed if the coating was worn off. Only keep my phones for a year. I usually only wipe with a microfiber cloth. Once a month will remove from the thin shell case and wipe it down with a clearer safe for glasses and their no glare coating.

Pretty impressive for sure, but how is the screen as far as repelling finger prints now? Not sure when Apple started using oleophobic coating, but do you remember how well it repelled originally vs now?

Depending on my hands it's a greasy mess if I'm not careful. I just checked, water will not bead on the screen. I've had the phone for so long I can't remember if it ever wasn't like this or not.

That said, I would rather wear off any coating they apply to the phone rather then cover it and never appreciate it for the life of the phone. Plus I preferred not having the extra layer of glass between my thumb and screen.

Do they make good screen protectors with oleophobic coatings or do most people just save it for some reason?

I have the same question. I'm reluctant to use a screen protector because I had one on my previous phone and though it advertised being anti-fingerprint I was constantly having to wipe the oil off of it. In contrast, my new iPhone (Air) barely picks up any oil. If I could find a protector that is as oil-repellant, and doesn't compromise too much in other areas--screen clarity (no compromise is acceptable I'd say), screen feel, anti-reflection, nor add noticeable thickness/weight, then I might inclined to use it. Or at least, use it if and when the coating wears off my iPhone. But Ceramic Shield 2 is supposedly pretty durable, so I'm not urgently trying to find a screen protector.
