Yes you have to purchase apple care when you make your watch purchase. Otherwise you have 60 days to do it in person. The reason being because they want to visually inspect the item before insuring t.

I called 1-800-MyApple about this and they stated that all you have to do is call Apple Care Directly at 800-275-2273 and they can do it for you over the phone. The rep said that they are open 8am - 11pm EST 7 days a week. I will be calling in the morning to add it to both mine and my wife's watches since we live two hours away from the closest Apple Store.

I'm curious what kind of remote diagnostic is possible with something like the watch.

When I called, they started asking about how I liked my watch, and when I said "fitness features and changing clock faces", they told me to describe the fitness features. At that point, I knew they were finding out if I really owned the watch or not. The agent kept asking to describe what happened after the first workout session, what awards I got, etc.

Seems a bit silly to me, can't they check my account to see if I received it or not?

They might have just really been interested in the fitness features.

I bought AppleCare+ through online chat/help. They also asked 'what are you looking forward to the most with your watch?' Thought it was an odd question since I've been using it the whole day. But anyway, link sent to your email address with authorization to post-purchase.

I just called them. No remote diagnostics or anything, just confirmed my details and sorted in no time.

Same here. Added to both my SS Classic and the wife's Sport through chat. They emailed me the links to purchase after authorizing. Just had to give them the serial numbers.

So how does this work if you buy second hand from eBay or craigslist? I'm seriously thinking about doing this because at this rate my watch isn't going to be delivered until the end of the month (I'm unfortunately in the 4-6 week range) if I'm lucky.

I would have to get a copy of the invoice from the seller to provide proof of purchase, right? But since their name and address is obviously not going to match mine, won't this pose a problem? And what if the seller doesn't want to give me a copy of the invoice because it has their personal info on it (understandably)? Will I just be SOL as far as being able to purchase Applecare?

Sorry for the stupid questions but I've never bought anything from eBay or craigslist, nevertheless an Apple product.

Received my watch Thursday. Just this second spoke on a chat and got the phone number to call. Called it, gave my serial and a few other details, listened to the spiel, gave my card details for payment. Done and dusted

No diagnostics, no inspection, no proof of purchase.

Your proof of purchase was when you provided your serial number and your order came up on their screen. If you bought the watch off eBay, all that info will not match yours. It remains to be seen if they'll let you buy AppleCare if that is the case. I suppose you can say it was a gift, but somebody could just have easily stolen it from a porch.
