After struggling to decide between the iPad 4 and Mini (i went with the mini)... I am having the same problem with a case. I was going to pick up a smart case but the reviews have been so so...

Off on the hunt I went to find something that meets my needs (business, travel, conferences, reading at home) and I have settled on a "book style" case (Dodocase, Pad and Quill, Portenzo) but it is going to be a little while until I have one in hand...so how can I protect my lovely mini in the meantime?

I went to Goodwill and picked up an old hard cover book (14 cents) and target for some elastic bands in the dollar bin ($1)

$1.14 later this is what I came up with.

note the name of the book "little white king"

I took at the pages out and drilled a couple holes in the back of the book...here is the final result

That's frugal for sure, but I see some places where rub marks might occur.

OTOH, that's a great disguise. Maybe get a larger book, leave the pages, and cut out a place for the mini to fit. People might see you taking the mini in and out of your book bag, but never see the book you're putting it into.

Good idea, and a damn site cheaper than one of the BookBook cases. On a side note, I saw a guy in Starbucks using his iPad box as his case; he was reading it while it lay in the box.

There are plenty of cost effective options for a case. Did you check the accessories discussions?

This is very neat. Can you please share a photo of the back and inside the book behind the ipad? How did you secure the straps, staples/glue? How did you keep it from poking out the back? I'd like to replicate this and so I'm just curious for more details on that step.

I would also like to know this. Would like to try it

Here you go...

I like it. It is slightly hollowed out book. I would like to do that for my mini. It would make a perfect disguise.
