My new 5s has accumulated 1.4 GB of other space in two weeks. I have installed iLife suit and a navigation app and 4 GB of music. How can I reclaim that space without reinstalling iOS7 as that would mean I have to adjust all the settings again. Is there a way to save your settings (on/off options in settings app) and reinstall?

Seems normal, as long as it isn't over 2.5 GB that amount of other would be acceptable. Anything over is most likely from corrupt data syncing the device.

I usually delete all text messages after reading, so none of thats taking up space. With my previous iphone it was 800 MB after 2 years with more music and apps loaded. Is it just because of ios7 and whats in that 1.4 GB?

Did you upgrade from iOS 6? If so there was a bug that prevents attachments from messages from being deleted and you'll need to use something like iBackupBot to remove them. If you had zero "other" when you started using iOS 7 then this is not the issue.

In Settings your usage will tell you the storage each app is using. What version of iOS 7 are you on?

Its a brand new 5s with 7.0.3. Why would the app usage show up in Other when it separately shows Apps?

How is resync different from syncing when you connect to iTunes?

Go to settings, general, usage and check every app (click that app and it will say " documents & data" size). That's where "other" space goes, apps like facebook, 9gag, tweetbot or twiter have a cache size and it gets bigger with time, for example after using facebook app 5 minutes a day for a week, the app will be around 200 mb. Just delete the app and reinstall it.

sync, backup, sync, backup again and then restore from backup

cleared up 4-5 GB this way
some is crap apps leaving data. i've also had some error prone app installs which probably left junk

Good question. I don't know. That's how the iOS 6 bug worked. The orphaned attachments were part of and restored with iTunes backups. That's why a third party product like iBackupBot was required. They stayed with you as long as you kept restoring.

Facebook app shows 127 MB under usage, when you click and go to Documents & Data it sows only 33 MB. Now does this 33MB includes newsfeeds and whats taking up remaining 94 MB?
Same with other apps.. the difference between Usage and Documents & Data is 80-90MB and the app size itself is not that big. So what is it?

my 5c has 1GB of other- i suspect it is emails or txts

4 main data guzzlers.

1. Txt

2. Email

3. Siri if you use it

4. Speed test. Each time it uses more than one MB.

There are others to be concerned with.

Movie streaming apps take up a lot

I use 3G instead of LTE Most of the time. 3G in my area is fast enough for me, but LTE is fast and takes up a bunch of date faster than 3G.

Do a Google search for the most data usage apps and you will get a better idea what to watch out for

You can clear emails and text and load it again if you want, but how about siri and speed test data, how do you clear that?

You don't. Just don't use SIRI that much. Some users play with the darn SIRI with asking dumb questions and their data usage goes way up. And people use Speed Test way too often. Not needed. Use it once or twice. Why do people use it so often is beyond me. If your speed is good to you by using the iPhone, there is no need to keep checking...

The rest is the size if the app.
