Got a call from 1-800-MY-APPLE just a few hours ago during the peak of the a Twitter jack and am wondering if they may be related or if it was a scam call to begin with?

I’ve had an Apple ID since 2007 and never once received a call from Apple and certainly never from that number. I was asleep so I didn’t pick up the call but considering my iPhone has that number saved as a Contact in the Contacts app (on all our Iphones) it seems bizarre to me that a hacker could get that number somehow and trick my phone into thinking it was legitimately Apple Inc.

Calls of that nature (seemingly from Apple or other tech companies) have been going around for a while now. Basically just spam with numbers being spoofed. Likely not connected to what has been going on with Twitter recently.

Yes, I had spammers spoof calling from the Apple Grand Central Store number. Another reason why I stopped going to that store as those calls would start up again whenever I visited.

That's almost guaranteed to be coincidence.

As a species we like to look for patterns of cause and effect because coincidence often feels too random to accept otherwise.

Spammers often reuse "known" caller ID numbers.

A few weeks ago I was remarking to my wife that I'd not had a spam call for a while. Got several almost directly after...

Unless you fell for the bait at the time, then this I'd say that it was probably just a random drive by spammers totally unrelated to the Twitter issue.

I did not fall for the bait, and they’ve been calling since 2017 desperate for me to cave in. I answered to concur about spoofing Apple phone numbers.

A very common ploy and used frequently since Caller ID technology became mainstream. Telephone spammers have been doing this for well over two decades.

Another more recent gambit is to fake a Caller ID number with the same area code and same three digit prefix as your phone to convince the less suspicious that they are getting a call from someone nearby.

Telephone spammers program robodialers to do this.

Up until today I've not had any calls from this spam.

I called Apple Sunday to buy AppleCare for my new Airpods.

Today I got 8 calls from the Spammers between 11am and 6pm.

I should add, by the way, Apple only has my cell number, the Spammers called my home number...
