1 DSL modem, 2 networks/AirPort extreme?

I may want to create 2 independent wireless networks in my house to speed up transfer. Is there a way to maintain internet access for both if I have 1 DSL modem? Can I "split" the signal and plug the respective ethernet cables into each AirPort Extreme? If I can, what kind of hardware would I need?
