hey guys i have my macbook with 2 gb of memory right now. i just bought elements 6 for mac. elements runs fairly smooth for me right now but when i have more than just that running my fans are going crazy and things start to slow down quite a bit. so my question would be, would me getting another gig of ram add any increase in performance or will it just be a small improvement that really wouldn't be worth the money

Somoene correct me if im wrong but doesnt RAM have to be paired with all the new machines? In which case youd have to do 4 gigs.

i dont' have to get four gigs, but there are many topics saying that pairing them would be best, but i think to save some money from buy 4 gigs i would just buy a 2 gig chip

Just bump it up to four gigabytes. Memory can be had for under $100.00 so it's a great time to buy. I installed four myself and not have had one single page out yet. :)
