1-sided playback from GB?

When recording with a mic into garageband, the playback only comes from one speaker. I'm pretty sure I just need to change the track to play from both instead of one, but how?

check the balance on the channel, it could be set all the way to one side or the other

what kind of mic? It's a little 1/8" deal it may be that the thing isn't plugged in all the way
