Amazon photo showed an SSD without heat sink, new. Only used available. The one I received has a heat sink and it will not fit in my 2014 MBP. Seller mentioned heat sink but said that it would work in MBP.

I assume that the heat sink is there for good reason. Is it possible/safe/difficult to remove the heat sink?

The heatsink is there on SSDs meant for the 2013 Mac Pro. The SSD itself is the same one used in a MBP only with the heatsink. With the heatsink on I don't think that you will be able to close the MBP as the heatsink will be in the way. You can remove it as I believe it is held on with thermal pads. After you remove it, then it will work fine in the MBP.
