I just want to share this experience, as many have been curious about this in different threads:

I exchanged my custom HDD in my 17 classic MBP for a 1TB WD Scorpio Blue, and everything runs perfect: I have plenty of space at last ( and three comfortably sized partitions!) and disk performance has also improved a lot according to geekbench.

The disc is 12.5 mm in height, but fits in well.
(It should also fit in every alu-unibody with exchangeable battery)

Anyone still thinking about upgrading internal disc space: Go for it!

The exactly described steps to put it in I followed from ifixit.com.

Out of interest, what do you use each partion for?

1tb would be sweet as could fit all my music/films/tv series/music projects on one machine. Maybe one day!

1. system, programs and all important non-multimedia stuff
2. music, video and alike
3. bootcamp windows

...and each partition is comfortably laaaaaarge! :D

exactly! has cost me 169 Euros - and was worth every penny already.
:)

oh, some days ago I have noticed a 1 TB external usb Harddisk from WD for 129 Euros advertised by a big store here in Germany! (Media Markt) Maybe it's the same 12,5 mm HDD inside? Would be quite well priced!! (open up, take out hdd, put in mbp, put old hdd in external case if still functionable after opening....)

I did a Raid 0 with 2 500GB 7200 RPM drives...It gave me 1TB of space plus the speed is pretty good compared to a single drive. I could not justify spending the $$$ for SSD and amount of space.

I like having a gig on tap, but I can't suffer slow spinning drives.

I just installed the WD 1TB in my 15" Pro the other day. I'm kinda a performance junkie and it doesn't feel slow at all... in fact the xbench score show it to be a little faster, although that is to be expected since the density of the information is being increased. Overall and awesome upgrade
