I had a gift card to use so I thought I'd upgrade my ATV4 to the ATV4k - overall cost to me was $39.

Ordered it, received it within a few days. Easy setup like the 4th gen, and the 3rd gen before that.

I have it attached to a Sony Bravia X800D (43"). Not a high end tv, but overall a good one.

It took a few days of viewing content via streaming apps with lots of changing settings on the Sony and the ATV4k. Eventually, I found the sweet spot for my use with 4K and SDR at 60hz. I had tried it at 50hz, but got random screen flashes. I do get a bit of color banding at times, not a real problem for HD content though. The HDR setting just didn't look good enough on HD content to be worth fiddling with.

I did rent a couple of movies off iTunes in 4K HDR and they looked great.

The remote is laggy, but not if I use the Remote App on my 7+. Odd.

So that's where I've ended up after a week.

For normal 1080p streams, setting the ATV4k to 4k SDR at 60 hz works rather well (upscaling).
For 4K HDR content, the setting for that res works great.
Simple switch, although an automatic process would be nice.
