I have a wired network in my home and have peripheral computers networked in. Prior to the last update of Mojave, 10.14.5, if I was on my laptop, or my other iMac in the house, I could hit Go...Network... and the name of my desktop would show in a finder window. I could double click on it and a login/connect window would appear where I could sign in with username and password. The window showed "Disconnected" in the upper left and "Connect as" in the upper right.

Since the update, that access have been severely compromised to non-existent. Now, when I Go...Network, I get a window that says, "Connecting" and "Connect as" and a spinning gear in the lower right. Forever.
If I reboot my desktop--the main computer, I can sometimes get in peripherally, but not always, and sometimes when/if I get in, various things happen...eg, I may access one file then Finder crashes, spinning beachball, hard reset required; OR, I can drill down a folder, but then no files show up, just a spinning gear.
I sometimes get a message that the main computer cannot be found or is non existent.

I have reset the modem, router, made sure file sharing is on, re-installed the update, all to no avail.
As I said my main computer, a 27" late 17 iMac running Mojave, 10.14.5, and peripheral computers are both older macs--a macbook pro and an iMac desktop, both running El Capitan.

I notice no aberrant behavior with the main computer.

Everything was fine before the "update."
Ideas?
is it possible to uninstall the update, or is that desirable?
Re-install OS?
This is a frustrating and time consuming situation, hope someone has an idea.
TIA
EDIT:
I ran first aid and found no problems on the host machine. To clarify a bit, sometimes Finder crashes when accessing files over the network, sometimes it is very very slow. My hardware config did not change, the only thing that changed was 10.14.4 to 10.14.5. I wish there was a way to go back???
