I just got my 2018 15" back with a brand new battery (yes, it had a swollen battery) courtesy of the apple keyboard replacement quality program, and was trying to ascertain the best practices to avoid a repeat. (Yes, I'm one of those who runs the machine plugged in probably 80-90% of the time, hooked up to 2 4k external monitors.)
Many (a few vocal?) folks on this board seem to prescribe at least unplugging it from power every night, and running the battery down "once in awhile" (couple of times a week? every couple weeks? monthly?). The theory being that being plugged in all the time, and the battery being 100% charged most of the time causes stress on the battery, and may also lead to overcharge. Ok, I can go with that...
However, with the intro of the battery health management feature in 10.15.5, I wonder if the aforementioned process is turned on it's head. It supposedly monitors your charging and usage patterns, and if it detects that the mac is plugged in most of the time, it will reduce the maximum charge, and not charge it to 100% (9x%?). Nothing is mentioned about the flipside, i.e. when you charge only when battery is low, but I surmise that in that situation it'll charge to 100%?
So, I was wondering if unplugging it every night will have the opposite effect, i.e. of having it then charge back to 100% every morning when it is plugged back in. As opposed to leaving it plugged in and only have it charge to <100% consistently?
Thoughts? (I wish Apple didn't treat all their customers like dummies, and release some more detailed technical info...)
