Hey, I just got a mac (used). So far it's great, but whenever I try to download the 10.3.9 Update combo, I get this thing:

"The Update MAC OS X Update Combined could not be verified and expanded correctly.

make sure you have permission to write to /temp/501/temporaryitems/com.apple.softwareupdate, then try again."

What should I do?

Thanks.

Tell us a bit more about your machine. What are the specs? What OS is it currently running? Have you performed a reformat and reinstall? Where are you downloading 10.3.9 from? :)

Ibook G3
Currently on 10.3.2.
800mhz
640 RAM
30GB Hard Drive
Haven't tried a reformat or reinstall. (probably can't reinstall, though--since I don't have the OS disks)
Downloading from AppleUpdates

Thanks.

I did the manual download, and I got this:

"Warning:
The following disk images failed to mount:
Image.........................Reason
MacOSXUpdateCo no mountable file systems"

So confused. :(

^Any idea as to what a "mountable" file system would be?

This is driving me crazy... I can't even use iTunes until I figure all of this out. :(

the 10.3.9 combined update killed my iMac G5. (was getting strange disk I/O errors in the system logs, machine would hang, stop, freeze, etc.

did a software restore/reinstall and re-did the update and it seems fine now.. could be one of the security updates that killed it, who knows.

good luck

HUH.

I should have read this earlier.

I did 10.3.9 today on my iBook (12" 800mhz G4) - call me dense, i had NO IDEA i'd never done it! OOPS! It was at 10.3.8 though.

Anyway, it crashed out of it (Teh Software update unexpectedly quit....blah blah blah). It was at the optimizing the disk - about 99% when it happened. It didn't then ask me to reboot. So i did that manually and when i checked it it showed it was at 10.3.9.

I figured it was done with the install - so all was well....

I think i'm ordering Tiger for the machine tomorrow - so i'm not overly concerned. But it's interesting that so many of us are having issues!

I had no problem with the 10.3.9 update when it came out, but now I'm on Tiger. pottebaum, contact your seller about getting the OS discs. They were licenced for your machine so the seller shouldn't need them any more. If you can't get them that way, then get a cheap copy from eBay. I strongly recommend a complete format and reinstall for any second hand computer. :)
