I'm just curious, what do you think the chances are of one more Tiger update before Leopard comes out? My parents' eMac is running 10.3.9, which is the most stable version of OS X I've come across so far... and I was wondering what others' opinions are of Apple wrapping up 10.4 with another superb finale.

I really don't think Leopard will be released in January. Try March or April.
So I would say yes. We will see 10.4.9 before Leopard.
10.4.8 did seem kinda weak.

I have been expecting at least one more point release before Leopard (and maybe two, depending on the Leopard release date), but now that you mention it, I haven't seen mention of any 10.4.9 builds being seeded to developers.

I did not think small point releases needed to be seeded to developers?

The current trend is that the news of developer seeds gets leaked about 4-6 weeks prior to the final release.

MacRumors reported the 10.4.8 seed on August 29th, and the release followed on September 29th.

MacRumors reported the 10.4.7 seed on May 16th, and the release followed on June 27th.

MacRumors reported the 10.4.6 seed on February 22nd, and the release followed on April 3rd.

Most likely, not. It's too close to January, when Leopard is supposed to be released. I don't see it happening.

That's wishful thinking.

I expect to see two more point releases before Leopard is released.

Since we are so close to leopard, I think 10.4.9 will be the last update -- just in the timing of things.

I mean they go a few months in between, etc.

But, they could go to 10.4.10 even after they released OS X Leopard -- fixes and such™. :)

I think .9 will come after leopard as that way they can patch things up and to compatibility things related to 10.5

Idunno - seems we might be due for an update, seems around the time (when was the last update? -- can't remember) and Apple going from now until Spring for an update is highly unsual for them.

But, you may be right.

Could have sword there was a MR article about 10.4.9 seeds, but I was mistaken. Pretty certain we'll see at least one more for update to Tiger though, unless Leopard comes out in January (I'm guessing spring, like Apple said, though).

Has Apple ever released an OS update to a previous system after a new system had already come out?

No idea pre-OS X wise. But Apple did released 10.3.9 after the 10.4.0 GM but before it was available to the general public.

Has Apple ever released an OS update to a previous system after a new system had already come out?

Obviously this is a completely different situation given the presence of Classic in early OS X versions, but Apple released 9.2 and 9.2.1 after 10.0 came out, and 9.2.2 came out after 10.1 was released.

But other than that, I don't think Apple has ever released a point release to a previous system after the release of the new system...certainly not within the last fifteen years.
